Drones Regulations and Guidelines
In 2015, the Department of Home Ministry and civil aviation embarked on formulating drone regulations and guidelines for Nepal. These guidelines and regulations were put in place to ensure safe and responsible usage of drones within the country. While I won’t go into the details of these regulations, I would like to emphasize their significance in shaping the drone ecosystem in Nepal.
Government Organizations Utilizing Drone Technology
Several government organizations in Nepal have recognized the potential of drone technology and are actively utilizing it in various sectors. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Information, Department of Forest, Nepal Police, Nepal Army, ND Lmtc, and other application-oriented organizations have been leading the way in integrating drones into their operations.
Through our extensive literature review, we have identified five major thematic areas in which government organizations in Nepal are currently using drones:
1. Surveying and Mapping
Drones have proven to be invaluable tools in surveying and mapping the diverse landscapes of Nepal. From conducting topographic surveys to creating accurate 3D models, drones have significantly improved the efficiency and accuracy of mapping activities.
With the majority of Nepal’s population reliant on agriculture, the use of drones in this sector has immense potential. Drones equipped with sensors and cameras can monitor crop health, detect pest infestations, and facilitate precision agriculture techniques, ultimately increasing productivity and optimizing resource management.
3. Disaster Management
Nepal is prone to various natural disasters, such as earthquakes, landslides, and floods. Drones have emerged as critical tools in disaster management efforts. They can be deployed quickly to assess damage, locate survivors, and map affected areas, enabling faster and more effective response strategies.
4. Energy and Infrastructure

The Land Management Training Center (LMTC) is currently utilizing drones for research and training purposes. Since the 2015 earthquake, there has been an increased demand for training in drone technology. People are eager to become drone pilots and acquire skills in this rapidly advancing field. Training and capacity building initiatives are crucial to meet this growing demand and ensure a capable and skilled workforce in the drone sector.
Drones are also being used extensively for research purposes in Nepal. They have proven to be invaluable tools in collecting data and conducting aerial surveys for various research projects.
