But ultimately, there are five reasons why we decided to return this and we want this comes across as a negative review and at the end, we’ll talk about a lot of the positive things we really did enjoy about this drone before we get into all those reasons. Skydo did not send us this drone. We had to go through the pre order process and it took about two and a half months before we finally received it before we start testing it out if you’re buying this drone, it’s, probably for the obstacle avoidance or the autonomous flights. If the offshore components we didn’t have any issues and moved around all the obstacles, no problem, it was so impressive to watch, but where we did have some issues was with the autonomous flight. Our primary use case will be hiking. We went to a local park, we took the beacon with us and, i said, follow us from the back left and it took a while for the sky to figure out where we’re located, even though we’re walking towards the drone and as it was figuring out, it Had a very twitchy motion: it wasn’t a nice smooth motion. It was more like a snap to motion before before we finally figured out where we’re located and as it was tracking us, we had the subject tracking enabled i said: go to orbit mode follow around us. So you get a nice set of the mountains, see some of the sunset and for some reason, instead of staying at the same altitude, it dropped to a lower altitude before beginning the orbit.
Now scotty recommends that this is used in the daylight conditions or brighter light conditions. This was the golden hour so that may have contributed. We did test it twice during that time. We were there and it still had the same behavior i’m. Not a big fan of this controller, i think the primary reason – i’m – not a big fan of it – is the way it mounts the phone on my google pixel. It sits right on the down volume button, so it’s pushing it the entire time. I did try sliding my phone over a little bit to get it off there, but on more than one occasion, my phone actually popped out of the controller, which was extremely scary. The next thing i don’t like about the controller is the sticks. I couldn’t get a really good feel for them and if i use the pinch method or the thumb on top method, i’d find myself yelling, left or young right. That was ascending or descending. Maybe a few more hours than the controller would help me kind of mitigate that that behavior, but i just didn’t, get a very good feeling for the sticks. Switching gears is some something nice to haves. I would love to charge my phone from the controller it currently doesn’t do that. I would also have a button that switched between photo mode and video mode, then, at the upper right hand, side there’s, a digital zoom button, for whatever reason i use it, it actually moves the drone forward and moves it backwards.
So i guess it’s like a manual zoom button, if it’s just flying closer to it. Oh weird, Music but i’d love to reprogram this button to do iso shutter. I find that it’ll be a little bit more helpful than a digital zoom and, lastly, i would love to be able to store this cable with the controller that way just grab the controller and not have to worry about where’s, also making sure i have the cable. I would love to see a smaller version of this or design that had collapsible arms. I understand where skydio chose this design to make sure these cameras are all in the exact same position. I hike with a 26 liter bag and once i put this in the case plus take the beacon, the controller or the charger and our normal camera gear, my bag is absolutely packed. I can’t see anything else in there last june we went a hiking trip together and when we got to the top, it started snowing and so having this extra clothing. Having extra layers was so beneficial and make sure you actually enjoy the rest of our hike. I was getting between 18 and 20 minutes of flight time before the low warning message popped up, so you have 90 seconds remaining. Skydive says 23 minutes so i’m actually really happy with the flight time, with our primary use case being hiking and also doing some car camping. So last year we did three days of car camping.
We would need a way to charge these portably. This guy recommends a 40 to 100 watt charger, which you can totally find it’s, just an added expense to fit our use case. I think the app works great if you’re flying autonomously, where i feel like it falls short, is when you’re flying it manually and for all that i’m going to mention today. I put in feature requests so hopefully we’ll see them in the future, but starting out i would love to see some kind of overlay like a thirds overlay across or circle make sure the shots are all lined up correctly, because there’s no way to switch between photo And video on the controller you’re, switching it in the app where you can adjust your iso, your shutter speed and white balance for the white balance. I would love to see a little bit more granularity right now. You have 5000 and 6500. I typically set our cameras to 5500, so i can see a little bit more granularity. The last item, we’d like to see, is right there on the home screen to have the control of your iso and shutter speed. I like to shoot with nd filters and it’d, be nice to adjust the iso and shutter speed first time to click into the camera, app to change those and then one weird thing we noticed about the app is when we did change from photo mode to video Mode, the screen went all red for about five seconds before it corrected itself and went back to normal.
Switching gears. Let’S talk about some of the things we absolutely love with the skydio2. I decided to go inside and get one more flight in before sending it back. There’S so many things i love about the skyd2, so i’ll talk about the camera system and i’ll talk about the company, but the camera system. We were blown away by the image quality. It was so good and then for the nd filters. If you like, using nd filters they attach on and attach off so easily, it makes it so simple and, lastly, is the range of motion. It has fantastic range of motion and then one more thing. One more bonus thing is: i love the case landing when you go to land it it lines up with the case and then automatically lands, it so switching gears and talking about the company every time we’ve interacted with them. They’Ve made us feel like family, whether it’s on social media or reaching out to their support. I absolutely love it. One of the cool things is when you open up the box, they have a letter from the ceo thanking you for purchasing it. So those are all the great things we’ll talk about for right now we absolutely love skydia 2 and even though it didn’t work for us today, we’re hoping with the next edition, the next version that it will work for us. If you have any comments, please leave them below we’d, be happy to answer them based on our feedback.
