Today he owns a film production company and pulls off some of the craziest fpv shots for the biggest brands in the world. So basically phil is the definition of an fpv pro pilot and then there is me a complete noob in the world of fpv who crashed phil’s racing drone at my first try and almost threw up by watching two tutorials in the dji simulator. Well, to be fair, i was also able to pull off some pretty decent shots after a couple weeks of training, but still, i would say that i’m, a bloody beginner, as i already did a drone battle against my other friend matthias, where i flew a stabilized drone Against his fpv drone, i knew that i could stand a chance against phil’s fpv skills, or at least try. So i challenged phil to compete against me in an epic fpv drone battle in order to find out who of us can create the most cinematic fpv video Music, welcome to a new video guys i’m here with phil and uh today, today, we’re gon na do a Challenge blast your ass, as it is quite obvious that phil is the better fpv pilot. We decided to give a little twist to the challenge, which is that both of us not only have to fly our drones, but we also have to edit the video. In the end i mean nicholas is already a really good pilot, but maybe i get some little bit closer and tighter gaps.
Then, when it comes to the editing part i’m, you know i’m. The pilot so i’m really curious to see how it turns out. I think you have to capture really cool shots, but obviously it also plays into it. What kind of sound design you do and all that kind of stuff? So here is how the challenge is going to go down. Both of us are allowed to use any fpv drone with any kind of camera mounted onto it. We are going to drive to three different locations on the west coast of mallorca, and each of us has one battery to fly for each location but there’s a little twist because he is flying the dji fb1 and i don’t know it has battery for three hours. We agreed that we both fly for five minutes, five minutes per spot as soon as we come back and as soon as we imported the footage. Both of us have three hours to edit a one minutes: cinematic video, while using music and sound effects from art list, which is also the sponsor of this video. So thanks for sponsoring the video and now we just stopped talking and we’re, going to jump straight to the first spot, yeah let’s. Do it let’s go there. Let me introduce you to our first location, gorg blau. This is an artificial water reservoir in the middle of the tramontana mountain range. The reservoir is surrounded by massive rock formations with trees, and we have a small road running along the lake.
I would say that this is more of a wide location, as it doesn’t feature very tight gaps to fly through. However, there is this small hill, which offers a lot of opportunities in terms of diving with fpv drones. Today is game day, so full performance and no regrets dude chill out. The first thing we did was setting up our quads and adjusting the settings of our cameras where phil asked me to use one of my sd cards today we are competitors first of all, we’re. Just going to look at our weapons of choice, what kind of quad are you going to fly? First? They were thinking to use the big one with the black magic on it, just to destroy him with raw quality. But then i thought uh. Maybe let’s fly the smaller one and with the gopro, so i can risk a little bit more on the shots. Five inch quad on six inch arms with a gopro six yeah for me, i’m, just flying a dji fpv with the gopro 9 on it. He literally has a camera on it, but puts another camera on top yeah. So these are the drone setups that we’re going to use, and now we just have to determine who’s going to fly first, because we can definitely have a look at the flight paths of each other. So i think that the one who flies first is going to have a little bit of a disadvantage.
Okay, so the one who chooses the shorter one just has to start. You go first Music, i’m gon na go first let’s, go welcome i’m. Going to be your commentator for today, unfortunately, some of the following clips don’t have any audio because the microphone somehow decided to just stop working, but because of that, you have the pleasure of listening to my beautiful voice. While i give my best at describing what happened so here, we can see me getting into position and launching my drone like a boss, as i knew where the bangers of this location would take place. I immediately made my way to the small hill, where i went for some first dives and lost connection to the drone. While phil was cracking some jokes and making fun of me, i restored the signal and made my way down to the lake. I got some pretty dope shots while shredding down the rocks, which can be seen by me, opening my mouth, the wider it’s open the better the shot. Next up, i headed to the other side of the lake, where i captured some nice shots of the road while flying along the trees. At this point, phil stopped cracking jokes and got a bit nervous as he realized that i’m actually a better pilot than he expected. For the end of my five minutes, i headed all the way up to another corner of the lake in order to get some variety into my shots.
While phil made a new friend and showed her where my drone was, i ripped down another mountain which has to be one of my favorite shots of this location. I returned back to our spots caught my drone. Like a legend, and now it was time for phil to show what he was capable of. Okay, this commentary might be a bit biased, as phil was already in shock of my insane fpv skills. I tried to make him even more nervous by telling him his gopro wasn’t recording, even though it was funny right after i started the timer and phil took off. He flew straight up to the spot, where i ended my flight to start it off. He went for a full on curvy dive down the edge of the mountain where he tried to fly as close as possible to different rocks and trees. He then made his way to the main attraction of our location, where he flew super close to the cliff side of the hill and revealed the mountain while flying backwards. After that, he went for some more close calls and flipped his drone while diving down at this point, i told boris to move in front of us to capture some better audio, which i think didn’t really improve. After i told phil that he only has two minutes left, he flew to the other side of the lake, which turned out to be a huge mistake. As there was no more sun and the shots just looked like garbage when phil returned his drone, he pretty quickly realized that i probably pulled off the better flight and therefore he tried to gain back some votes.
But i hope you guys like have a little bit of a vote for me. Don’T manipulate them. If you guys vote for me, maybe we can get free hats or some samples for you and can give you discount this i’ll get out here, what’s that snacks for the next location. I would count that as doping to be honest on our way to the next location, phil captured, basically everything for his instagram stories link in the description after a short, slow motion, fight and walking through some pretty cool looking caves, we entered the playground of our second Flight, what do you say? No that’s, crazy, like from every angle, looks different, so yeah, i wonder where we’re gon na fly. The second location really is one for the books. This insane place is called torrent de pareis, and it is surrounded by towering cliffs, which reach heights of more than 200 meters there’s. A small river running through this massive gap in between the mountains, which makes this place pretty unique. The gap ends into the white ocean where some people chill on their yard boats. For me, this location honestly is fpv heaven, as you have giant rock formations which are perfect for diving plus, you can get more technical by flying through some tighter gaps. I think to go over there. We need to take this bridge there. That is actually pretty sketchy made. It oh it’s, going to be so loud with the drones here, especially with the dji one sound check here that is pretty loud.
Phil is slowly going crazy because he knows that he’s about to lose Music, which nd are you flying i’m, not telling you going for eight eight yeah, all right Music. I think the real challenge here with this fpv battle is that you have to think about a strategy before you take off, because we just have five minutes for each location. We don’t have any time to spot which parts or which lines are going to look good. So we just have to be like right on from the beginning, because, like you, can’t go up 100 meters, all the time to do a dive over and over again. So i think that’s like the most difficult part, and also i think that we should focus on the bangers like think about which ones are going to be the most epic, because one minute is a really short video and it’s really worth it to only collect the Best ones and focus on a few instead of capturing a lot of different shots, that’s a small tip for you here, all right, who’s going to start so last time. It was also that the shorter one was the shorter one, so i’m going to pick the longer one. No all right now, phil is gon na start Music. Okay, wish me luck and five minutes on the clock. Let’S go all right, so he’s, first, just staying a little bit lower he’s coming now he’s going up to the cliffs he’s, already all the way up there.
I think right now, he’s entering the dive. Are you yeah, probably that’s? Why i’m so quiet? Can you see the ocean yeah i’m so excited to see this for myself? Three minutes still three minutes. Okay! According to what i see right now, this one was pretty sick. I would love to do a dive and go through something. You know at the same time through like a hole yeah, but that is super sketchy if you didn’t see it before right, yeah and especially, i need to like look for it too, so you still have two minutes i’m trying to find something to go through. So one minute dude i’m, so scared. Should i do it? What do you see there? I don’t know what you see. I see ah there’s a small hole, he’s just hovering in front of it. Are you going for it Music? So he touched a rock he’s going. All in Music, oh this one was crazy. Damn look at this dudes. How was it? Oh, my god, it was like hovering in front of it to see. Oh can i do it, but then i thought for your youtube channel. I give everything just to prove a little bit the difference between all right i’m gon na launch mine. Now those shots, look pretty amazing, so the pressure is high. Timer started, oh wow, that looks insane out there. Stop it dude i’m! So close to this here, you need to also perform under pressure Music.
This is just insane for diving here like for years, always you get quiet for me. I open my mouth. If the shot is good. Yeah it’s such a wide area, so many possibilities, but you don’t have any time to look for good lines right: Music! Oh damn! How long 10 seconds left? Oh? Okay, i’m. Coming back i’m coming back five seconds, i’m coming i’m coming, we’re gon na delete your footage. Three seconds two seconds: one: second: sorry for that overtime; i’m! Sorry for that, but dude that looks sick up there. This mountain up there, if you just dive down, if you see a little bit of the ocean, if you go close to all of these rocks man, this is the best location, i’ve dived. So far, yeah it’s pretty sick, wrap up for this location. I think it was pretty insane now we’re just going to head to the last location. Let’S go nicholas, you are killing us with these sick locations. Guys wait till you see the last one. This is gon na, be, like i mean just look at the lighting. This is insane Music there’s, like no time to Music waste holy just look at this road Music. Welcome to the last location, which is called sacalobra here. We have this incredible road which is winding down the mountains, all the way to the ocean. At one point, the road even runs beneath itself, which creates a short tunnel which gives some options for fpv shots.
While preparing our drones, you could definitely feel the pressure building up last location. The pressure is high i’m really trying to get some last bangers here, because this is definitely best location, best lighting. So a lot of focus now and we’re just going to figure out who’s going to fly first, okay, phil your choice. I hope it’s going to be me this time. Ah, damn it yeah i’m going to fly first yeah. I think that’s actually pretty good, because the light is just perfect right, hurry, hello and welcome back to another episode of no audio after climbing onto those rocks. We had the most epic view across the mountain range, and now it was time for my last flight. I launched my drone and went straight for the tunnel and in just 30 seconds of flight time i had captured my favorite shot. Phil got a bit nervous again and i enjoyed myself while flying at this epic location. But one thing which i didn’t know at that time was that my gopro was pretty underexposed as i chose the wrong nd filter nd8, looking good nope, nd8 didn’t look good, but still i had to make the best of it. I went for some more dives along different spots of the location and circled around ourselves, while phil threw his hands up in the air, as i realized that the sun was almost gone, i came back one minute early in order to give phil some proper flight time.
What a gentleman move phil quickly increased his iso as he knew it would be too dark and took off with his drone. Phil also immediately went for the tunnel while following the road and even flew through this tiny gap of the road barrier, he then went for some more average dives until he found another hole. He managed to fly through it at the first try which looked pretty sick as the time was running low phil made his way back to the starting point where he made his last move, no way upside down backwards. Okay, that was pretty sick and the timer is off. The final timer is off build. You got ta, come back Music sick. Now that we had our sd cards filled with epic footage. It was time for the second part of our challenge, editing the clip. So, in order to create a one minute cinematic edit, we can use both music and sound effects from art list, which is one of my favorite music licensing platforms out there and who were kind enough to sponsor this video. When it comes to music, you can either search for a specific type of song by using the different filter options, or you can just browse through the different spotlight collections and there’s, actually one spotlight collection, specifically for fpv. So i might check that out for my edit. Besides, some of the best high quality music atlas also has a huge sound effects: library which works with a cluster system and a simple search function, and this makes it super easy to find the right sound effects for anything you imagine, so it will be super easy To find swooshes and win sound effects and anything that we just need for our edits.
If you want to know more about sound design and how i use artless, you can check out my video in which i break down my full sound design, workflow right here. So i myself have been using artlist for many years now, and my favorite thing about them is that they just make it really easy for us creators by offering an unlimited worldwide license on all of their music and sound effects, which covers any kind of project. They offer three different pricing plans, depending on whether or not you want to have access to their music and sound effects library, but i can definitely recommend to get both of them, as it is a very reasonable price for what you get. If you want to learn more about them, you can click the link in the description and, if you sign up through the link, you will get two extra months on top of your subscription, so definitely make sure to check that out and now we’re, just gon na Jump into the editing, alright, three hours on the clock and we’re going to start and off. We went by searching for the perfect song for our edits and downloading some first sound effects, as it turned out three hours for the whole edit were super tight, as we not only needed to put together a video but also needed to stabilize all of the gopro Clips in real steady first, therefore, the first one and a half hours were gone in no time, so we almost have half time and i didn’t even have a look at my footage yet because i was just stabilizing and rendering proxies yeah.
I just only have like one hour 30 to complete this whole thing, so there’s a lot of time pressure right now, like i have to sort the clips, i have to cut them on the music. I have to do sound design. I have to do color grading. I feel like phil is just coming up with the sickest edit right now. I have no idea what i’m doing here now was the time to focus we tried to edit as quickly as we could and made some real progress. We have eight minutes left. Both of us are just super focused now i’m right now in sound design. I already did the color grading. How far are you? I did the sound design. I did color grading on the last clip now and i’m exporting because we need to be exported during time. No, no! No! No! No! Are you already exporting? No do it in a second. I wasn’t under this much pressure since, like high school it’s, crazy, stop talking now i need to focus man. I have six minutes left, so hey what’s, the so yeah one minute 40 left huh. Please can you go over? There watch the timer for him 30 seconds. Three two one: oh my god, i was rushing through that sound design export. That was a tough one. Man dude. I am so freaking excited to watch these edits. Now. To be honest, i didn’t even look at it yet who’s going to start you’re going to show me yours, i’m, going to start yeah.
I want to see pro first let’s go. Starting with that slow motion. Do that color grading! Oh, i can tell already like looks super high end. Then. Did you do like a dolly zoom thing? Vertigo effect, yeah dude, you did like some close calls. Yeah went all in holy. The color thing is dude that’s, pretty sick, holy yeah. It was a real challenge to be honest, because i basically edited all of this stuff in like one and a half hour, but yeah i’m actually happy with how it turned out i’m surprised, you’re flying like badass yeah, so i’m, not sure if, if mine is even Better, so ah dude especially you know these close calls and when you cut them fast, you don’t see the line before and after yeah, so it’s pretty sick. So you ready for mine i’m ready for yours man, even if you don’t, like it just at least tell them. Yeah i’m gon na be 100 honest man all right i’m excited for this. Let’S go Music dude that one was actually sick like just following the whole road dude like yeah. These dives are just insane Music Music. I still remember this one dude that one was honestly sick, yeah yeah regarding the movements. Obviously, this one was insane. I think that you could have done a little bit better when it comes to some timings, because, for example, that one shot where you go through that hole on the sunset spot.
I think that would have been like such an amazing shot, but it was just in there for like half a second but honestly man like phil doesn’t, edit at all, like he’s, always just shooting with drones. So i think that this was a really good job. Man, yeah yeah, for sure one thing i actually recognized is that phil, when he’s flying he’s doing like a lot more movements while diving down all of these cliffs and that’s. Actually one thing that i felt i was missing. While i was flying already that i’m just going down straight all the time and you’re just like going crazy and always finding new objects, so i definitely think that that really made your edits stand out. I think that this was such a fun battle, but actually you guys decide who of us won this battle. You can just comment down below under this youtube, video or under my instagram post, with either phil wins or nicholas wins, and if you want to support your favorite edit a lot more, then you just vote on both of these posts and after two weeks i’m, just Going to count all of the votes and then we’re going to see who’s the winner of of you guys and if you guys really like it, you know what we’re gon na do we fly to a different country and do the same thing again, all right guys. So i hope you enjoyed this video thanks so much phil for for joining along.
