I am back with another video and i am super stoked today to talk about the brand new dji r2s. Look at this little thing, so cool, so yeah i’ve been shooting with this drone for more than a month. Nu, almost two months – Denk ik – and today i wanted to do a little review about this drone and also compare this drone to the good old mavic. 2. Pro cause many people ask me about it like: is it much better than the mavic 2 pro what’s, the differences and stuff like that? Dus vandaag, i’m gon na talk about all of that i was paid and sponsored to do the release video i posted already on my youtube channel. You can find it – i don’t know, maybe somewhere up here or in my youtube channel, whatever so um, but for this one. This is not sponsored at all it’s, just a honest review of what i think of this brand new drone, because i think that many of you guys are actually wondering what it’s worth and what are the differences with the with the mavic 2 Pro. So i will start off with the camera, because i think it’s the most important thing. Then i will talk about the the whole body of the drone. Then i will talk a little bit about how it flies the controller and then give my conclusion about this drone. So let’s start off with the camera Music. So what is amazing about this drone is that it has a one inch sensor, offering 5.
4k op 30 frames per second and 60 frames per second in 4k, and all of that in such a small little piece of technology, is, behoorlijk verbazingwekkend, so um so yeah. The compared to the air 2 or to the mavic 2 pro the mavic 2 pro had a one inch sensor as well, but the air 2 had a half inch sensor so in terms of video quality with everything i shot, i really feel like. The quality is just as good as the mavic 2 Pro. There is absolutely for me. No difference it’s, not really better it’s, not worse, is, voor mij, miss really just as good as the mavic 2 Pro. The cool thing is that you can crop in post. If you want like my timeline, is always in 4k, when i’m editing so uh, i can crop crop quite a bit in post, which is uh, dat is vrij koel. The lens of this drone is a 22 millimeters f 2.8, while the the mavic 2 pro had a 28 millimeter. So this one is a bit wider than the mavic 2 Pro, so you can get some wider shots when, when you’re flying through tight spaces – which i think is pretty cool or if you want to get like a very big landscape from far away you’re going to Be a bit wider with this one which i think is a it’s a bit better to me at least and uh. The air 2 had een 24 millimeters uh lens.
The thing that you need to know is that on the mavic air 2s um it’s a fixed aperture at f 2.8. So on the on the mavic 2 pro you could change the aperture that allowed you to be like more flexible. Ik zou zeggen, with your nd filters now with this one it’s, always f 2.8, so at first i was like. Ah, this is gon na be a real bummer uh, maar uiteindelijk, as i told you, i’ve been shooting with it for almost two months is, and just just works very well, you just have to to be more precise with the nd filters i think, have To change them more often, and sometimes i had to turn the drone on and then i was like, ah it’s too dark, so i had to turn it off change the filters too dark or too bright whatever, but uh yeah that’s, just the thing uh, and also You will need more nd filters, so on the mavic 2 pro i had nd, 4, 8 en 16 en dan, if needed, i could change the aperture on this one. Since i cannot change the aperture um, shooting at i’m, mainly shooting at 25 frames per seconds because i’m, mainly shooting landscapes and stuff like this, i don’t really need uh, slow motions with the drone, om eerlijk te zijn, so if i’m shooting at 25 frames per seconde, my Aperture my shutter speed has to be 150, so if i’m at 150 and f 2.
8 and shooting like in complete bright daylight, then i sometimes had to use the nd 128, dat is vrij verbazend, dus um. So for this one i have nd 4. 8. 16. 32. 64., i usually use pretty often the 64 en dan 128, but i don’t use very often because i almost never shoot in complete bright daylight. So yeah that’s just the thing at first. It might look like ah it’s a bummer, but in the end you can you can definitely work with it. It’S not to me it hasn’t been a problem at all, shooting with the fixed f. 2.8. Another thing that you need to know is that on the mavic 2 pro you had two different modes. You had the full field of view, which was a bit wider, and then you had the hq mode, which was a bit tighter, and i really liked it because i could switch from full field of view to hq. And when i put put hq, you have like more of a parallax effect with the with your subject being a bit more zoomed in and the background uh moving faster on this new drone. You cannot do that. It’S uh it’s, always the same um, the same mode. Another thing is that on the mavic 2 pro you could choose d log and then you could. You could set your own settings like with the saturation, the sharpness and the contrast. So you could tweak these settings a little bit on the new air2s.
You cannot do that. I don’t really, i don’t think it’s a it’s, a problem but same i wanted to to let you guys know about it. So now let’s talk about colors, which is to me even more important than the resolution itself, because the amount of colors that your camera is going to be able to capture is going to have a real impact on your ability to color grade the footage afterwards. So this new r2s does just like the mavic 2 pro it does 10 bit, which is amazing. So when you’re, when you’re flying, i mean when you’re in the app you have to go to the settings, you you won’t see 10 bit or 8 bit or whatever, but you have to choose age 265, which is going to be 10 bit. Dus, met de 10 bit colors it’s capturing a huge amount of colors which allowed me to do some super nice color grading. So i really love the greens like i was in costa rica, shooting the jungle, the rainforest and all these different greens, and with this this drone could i could really do a super nice color grading afterwards, uh same when i was flying the volcano or in the Mountains with all the different oranges like more warm tones with the sunset the golden hour and all that so i’ve really been able to push the color grading and really like do whatever i wanted and do the way. I wanted it to look and i never felt like i couldn’t achieve the the color grading.
I wanted so really amazing, um amazing camera in terms of of colors, met de 10 bit all right. Dus nu, let’s talk about the low light capabilities of the drone. So just like the mavic 2 Pro, i think the the low light footage looks pretty bad to be honest, it’s still very noisy so in in my release, video all of the shots at the beginning of me, like going out of the ice cave and then hiking Up on the ridge, all of these were shot with the r2s. Uiteraard, so i was at the shutter speed 150 i fixed aperture 2.8 and then the iso i was at the max. Ik denk dat het, 1600 and uh straight out of the camera. The the the shots were very noisy, but in post, if you use a good denizer, is, definitely usable and it doesn’t look too bad. If you’re wondering i use the the neat video denizer, which works very good, so it really saved the footage and, in the end, i’ve been able to use the footage in the video, and i think it looks it. Doesn’T look perfect, but it still looks pretty good and it’s. Definitely usable and then one last thing pretty important to talk about is a new gimbal mode called fpv mode. So what it does is that the the gimbal is going to follow the movement of the drone. So normally, when the drone would lean right, the gimbal was would stay straight, so the footage looks straight, but now with fpv mode, when the drone is leaning right, the camera is going to lean right together with the drone like this, so um that’s, a pretty good Cool idea: um i’ve used it but i’m, not a hundred percent uh convinced by this let’s say because sometimes the the footage was very shaky.
So if you’re flying straight and then you just go right, it’s going to look fine. But if you go right and then from right, you will go left and then right again or stuff like this, when it’s going from left to right or right to left the the footage isn’t smooth to me, it’s a bit shaky, so uh it’s it’s, a cool Thing, Als u wilt, if you want to put like i don’t, know real fast cuts or stuff like this and have that sort of fpv feeling. But if you want it to be like super smooth, what i would rather do is shoot in normal mode and then use after effects to mimic the fpv uh, the fpv style in post production, uh yeah, with after effects so yeah that’s about it. Het is., a cool, Um het is, a cool mode to play around with you, should definitely try it and see by yourself. Uh i’ve used one shot in the in my release, video that i shot in fpv mode, but uh that’s, the only one i used, i shot quite a few ones, but you only only only used one alright. So now let’s talk about the next thing. The body of the drone Music, so this dji r2s, zoals je zien, is super small here compared to them to the mavic 2 Pro. You can see both right here, it’s much much smaller and it’s. Also much lighter so the mavic 2 pro is 907 gram, while the little air 2s is only 595 gram, it’s just a little bit heavier than the air 2, because the air 2 was 570 gram, but compared to the 2 pro it’s much much lighter, which is For me, a lot more convenient because i’m doing a lot of hiking shooting in very remote locations.
Sometimes i have to hike for an entire day for two days three days so having such a small drone that still offers the same quality as the mavic 2. Pro is already a big game changer for me, because not only the drone is lighter, but then each battery is much lighter, dat betekent dat, while i used to carry three batteries for the mavic 2 pro now with the air 2s. I carry six batteries in my backpack, which means i can fly just twice as much, which is just amazing, so i have twice more opportunities of capturing cool footage. Also talking about the batteries. Another important thing to mention is that the the batteries of the mavic air 2 are the same as the air 2s. So if you already have the mavic air 2 you’re going to be able to use your batteries for the new air 2s yeah. So having such a small drone is not only better for the weight because it’s much lighter, but also for the fact that it’s going to be way easier to fly through tight spaces since, since the drone is a lot smaller. So if you want to fly through a tent, if you want to fly through a narrow canyon, between trees or whatever, it’s going to be easier – and i really love doing such shots because it really gives a feeling of of of speed rather than like always being Away from everything, when you fly close to objects between things and all that it really gives that that speed feeling that i’m really always looking for in my videos.
So next thing to talk about is the flight abilities Music. So the r2s on the paper is flying as long as the mavic 2 Pro, die is 31 minuten, and the air 2 is 34 minutes in real life and with my experience of flying with it in all kinds of environments, i would say it flies for about 20 25 minutes kind of, depending on how you fly, and i feel like it’s a little bit it’s flying for a little bit less than the mavic 2 pro it’s, just my own opinion, is. How i feel about it while working with uh with both drones. I feel like the r2s flies just but a tiny bit a tiny bit less time uh than the than the mavic 2 pro i’ve i’ve been flying in all kinds of environments. Like i flew in the alps at a very high altitude during winter time. It was super cold. I think it was like minus 15, maybe even minus 20 graden, and it flew just perfectly. I had absolutely no issues with the cold and for the little story. Uh in the end is my phone that actually died because of the cold. So i had to hit the return home button to to get the drone back came back, landed right next to me, had no issues but yeah it’s, just flying very well in the cold and uh hadn’t had no issues same. I flew in costa rica in the jungle where the the environment was very wet and i had no issues as well.
Sometimes it was very hot as well no problem, so i really had absolutely no problem flying flying in like all kinds of environments. I also flew under the rain in costa rica. I had no issues, i wouldn’t recommend doing it because i really don’t know if it can have like a an impact on the drone or anything, but we were in a pretty cool location with a nice waterfall and i really wanted to get footage out there. So i just flew it under the rain, had absolutely no issues with it and i also flew in some very windy conditions. So this is the thing i was most concerned about with these drones is it’s a lot smaller and lighter than the mavic 2 Pro. I was like uh, maybe it’s, not going to fly as good uh in the wind, so we went to a volcano. It was like super super super windy and uh. Ik was als. I need to get some shots, so i’m gon na fly it even even with the with all the wind, and i flew it and it did just like. I had absolutely no issue. I had a friend there that was flying mavic 2 pro and the air 2s was flying to be honest, just as good Laughter, then so still talking about the flight abilities uh about the sensors. De Mavic 2 pro has has side sensors here on the back uh, which the air 2s doesn’t have, om eerlijk te zijn, i’ve been able to crash a mavic 2 pro despite having the side sensors, so i don’t really care about it.
Uh, the the r2s had has upward sensors, which i don’t really know yeah. Maybe you know, if you wonder something going up under a tree, i don’t know but yeah it has these but uh yeah. To be honest, i don’t really use these sensors and don’t really trust them, because i already crashed my mavic 2 pro while having the sensors on um and another thing that is pretty important. I think is you: you can disable all the sensors, but you cannot disable the downward sensor, which is this little blue thing down here. So when i was uh getting the shot uh flying through the tent that you saw in the release, video of the air 2s. I couldn’t um, i couldn’t disable it so when i was like getting closer to the tent, the the drone was actually seeing the ground, so it was going up a little bit so so at first i crushed the drone into the into the tent. I don’t think i have footage of that, but yeah crashed it into the tent, but no one had no issues with the drone. So what i did is i took a sticker and i put a sticker on the the back sensors. I mean the the sensors down there, the little blue sensors and uh. So then it wasn’t seeing the ground anymore and then i’ve been able to fly through the tent without having the drone like going up when i was getting closer to the ground.
Dus, just a little trick in case you want to disable this. I always have stickers in my backpack and i just put one on the sensors and it worked perfectly and then last thing pretty important as well is the speed because, as i said earlier, i really like to have fast movements with the drone, and i think this Um this drone is flying like it’s super super fast, maar het is., quite not as fast as the mavic 2 Pro. I think the mavic 2 pro is a little bit faster, but not much so yeah speed is not a problem for this drone. You can go super fast. Oke, next thing talk about the controller, so at first i was like i have a much smaller drone, but the controller is bigger like compared to the mavic 2 pros controller, but uh in the end. To be honest, i think i really like this controller more than the one of the two pro i think it’s the same of the air ii. I never used in there too, but i’m pretty sure it’s the same and uh yeah. So what i like more is that, since it’s bigger, you have a much better grip. I also like it more when you, where you put the you put the phone up here. I think it holds it better and also the the cable. I think the cable is the management of the cable is much better than on the two probes and the two pro already broke the side cable a few times.
Dus dan., i had to to take my own cable that i was actually uh plugging in down under the under the controller, but then sometimes uh like not sometimes maybe just a few times. I i forgot to take my own cable, but here with this one, it’s never gon na happen, because the cable is always here just take it out, put the put the phone in and uh and yeah it’s pretty good. I really like it to be honest, so the thing i really love about this controller is here in the middle. You have the three different modes, so you have cine mode normal mode and then sports mode. You have these modes as well on the on the mavic. 2 pro here on the on the side button, but the thing that is a lot better here on this new drone is that you can actually set each mode. The way you want like exactly you can change everything like you can change the speed you can change. How sensitive it’s going to be like for the for the the rotations for the gimbal and everything so yeah it’s super convenient depending on the shot you want to take. You can change the settings super quickly, and this is something i really love about it. Dus, to conclude, this new air 2s is definitely going to become my go to drone from now on, uh, just for the simple reason that it’s much lighter and smaller than the mavic 2 Pro, while still offering the same quality and the same abilities in terms of Of colors and of color grading for post production, so yeah i can now carry, as i said earlier twice as many batteries, so i can fly twice as much for for the same weight or maybe even a bit.
Less it’s smaller flying through tighter places is easier. So you also have different modes that allow you to do new things like the little fpv mode, um. Also the settings like setting the different modes and all of that so yeah all in all. This is definitely gon na replace my mavic 2 pro uh yeah. So that’s about it, if you have any questions, let me know in the comments down below. I will be happy to answer.
