Todays video is talking all about the performance of the mavic 3s camera. Now i know what you might be thinking at this point: chris, the mavic 3s been out for months now, ive seen dozens, if not hundreds, of review videos on this drone. I dont need to see any more and you know what i i hear you on that.

I get that ive had the mavic 3 for a little less than a month, and i feel like its my obligation as somebody that is trusted by at least some of you out there as a drone resource here on youtube, to throw my hat into the ring And give my take on this camera. In short, this camera has replaced all other drone cameras in my arsenal as the main workhorse for commercial work. Especially, there is nothing else like it in the prosumer market and i could see the mavic 3 sticking around for a very very long time, probably longer than we had the mavic 2 pro as sort of the flagship drone for dji enthusiasts. Before we get into the resolution and looking at some of the video footage – and some of the photos from this drone were going to talk about some of the specs of this camera and were also going to need a whiteboard for that. So, first of all, dji upgraded the sensor size from a one inch sensor in its predecessors like the mavic 2 pro the phantom 4 pro and even the air 2s to a 4 3 cmos sensor. The camera resolution is 20 megapixels, staying on par with previous drones. In its category, its max video resolution is 5.1 k at 50 frames per second. Its max video bitrate is a scorching 200 megabits per second, and it shoots in d, log and raw formats, as well as jpeg and standard mp4 and dot movies.

Dji also implemented. Another sensor on this camera, with its new shooting mode explore mode now there has been some kickback on this particular flight mode, or this particular video in photo mode in that the quality of the images that you get out of it isnt, really something you can use In a professional application, but this this video is not really about that. Essentially what they did is they implemented a digital zoom lens in the body of this camera. That gives you up to 28 times. Digital zoom and the big kickback is that quality again its digital zoom, so you lose quality as you crop in on that image digitally. I really am not talking about that lens today, thats, something that we cover in our mavic 2 pro versus mavic 3. Video that i did with matthew sherwood, if youd like to learn more about the functionality and nuances of that explore mode camera check out the link in the upper right hand corner of this video. Overall, this camera is top notch in the grand scheme of things and hands down the best piece of aerial imaging attack that you can purchase in the world of prosumer drones. As stated earlier, the max resolution is 5.1 k at 50 frames per second, which is what youre seeing right now. The aspect ratio on this footage is more geared toward a cinematic style presentation, as it has a wider, more larger than life feel to it.

This provides cinema quality footage right out of the camera, but also provides a level of flexibility in post production, not previously seen for those of us that export our files in standard 4k and 1080p. Another video shooting mode that has this cinema style output is djis. New cinema 4k mode, which provides a wider angle, video that also has that movie feel to it. It is slightly larger than the standard 4k so cropping in on the cinema. 4K footage is also an option that makes post production more flexible and convenient. If youre. Like me, though, youre mostly shooting client projects, commercials, youtube, videos, vlogs and anything that falls into a similar realm, so that cinematic style coming right out of the camera is either not necessary, not preferred or can be easily achieved in post production in this case, shooting in Any other standard shooting modes like the 4k resolution that youre seeing now, is how youd probably want to go about recording your video files between the hasselblad color science, djis famous d log mode and a bit rate that chews up these landscape shots for breakfast. The 4k footage that comes out of the mavic 3 is built different than any drones of the past. Even 1080p footage looks so much better than standard hd footage, because of just how brilliant the colors and details in the image appear on screen. Now i dont want to be too negative about the mavic 3, because overall, this drone is absolutely awesome, but but one place that it fell short again was in its variety of video resolutions and the frame rates that go with it.

So in the past we saw a variety of resolutions available on various drones. You had 1080p as sort of like the floor for modern day drones, and then you had 4k as the ceiling. That was like the max that you could get out of it now. Dji is stepped up at ceiling with 5.1 k at 50 frames per second thats. A good thing where it sort of fell short, was by cutting out the 2.7 k option, which always acted as a nice little bridge between the higher resolutions and the higher frame rates. Because previously, if you wanted to get a higher frame rate, like 120 frames per second, for instance, you had to drop down to 1080p resolution 2.7 k gave us the ability to have footage in a resolution standpoint that is really flexible in post production. You can scale it up to 4k without a noticeable loss in your footage, quality or you can scale it down to 1080p and have really sharp nicely detailed footage in that aspect, but also have a higher frame rate so that you can have more flexibility with how Fast or slow, your footage goes without having that choppiness by losing frames. Now slow motion is still available on the mavic 3 and its sort of a convoluted system to get those slow motion frame rates implemented, while youre flying so im gon na go ahead and pull up the screen on my mobile device that i use to operate.

My mavic 3 now in order to access higher frame rates for slow motion video with the mavic 3, you must first hit the little icon on the right hand, side of the screen that looks like a piece of old film. This will then allow you to select slow motion mode where you can choose from 1080p 4k or cinema 4k at 120. Frames per second in previous literature released about the mavic 3 in all of its shooting modes. Dji had promised that at 1080p you could get up to 200 frames per second. As of the recording of this video – and it is march 25th of 2022 – there is still no capability for the mavic 3 to shoot at 200 frames per second, which would provide super slow motion, video im, assuming that in the near ish future we dont really know There will be a firmware update released that will allow you to then go up to 200 frames per second when shooting at 1080p. Now we are going to get into photography for the mavic 3 too too much because its really been just a very incremental change from the old cameras like the mavic 2 pro the phantom 4 pro dji, r2s, etc to the mavic 3s camera its still a 20 Megapixel camera, but the big difference has been the sensor size. Again, it comes back to that four thirds sensor provides so much more light, which means so much more information, which means better imagery out of your camera.

So while the megapixels are the same as its predecessors, the mavic 3 does take sharper more detailed photos because of that increased sensor size. What im trying to say is if youre, a professional photographer, you might notice the quality difference between, like the mavic 2 pro, for instance, and the mavic 3 and youll appreciate the upgrade that the dji mavic 3 received in its sensor size. However, if youre somebody that mostly just posts to social media, the difference between the two images is going to be negligible, especially when were talking about well lit atmospheres like you go out in the middle of the day, and you take a photo with the mavic 2 Pro or the air 2s or the phantom 4 pro, and then you take a picture with the mavic 3, its youre really not going to see that much of a difference, because that one inch sensor is more than capable of taking really professional style photos. If the lighting is right, where youre gon na see a difference in that application, the social media application is in low light settings. So, if youre shooting at night in the evening early morning, whatever the case may be, the four third sensor is going to make a difference. But again its gon na be negligible to really drive home. The point about how good this camera is, how flexible the camera on the mavic 3 is. I wanted to push the envelope just a little bit and its not its, not the most extreme push that ive ever done in my entire life, but it is something thats.

A little bit different, i decided to shoot this entire video out of the mavic 3.. Now im not talking about the drone footage. You saw earlier that that goes without saying that was the mavic 3. Obviously, because thats the topic of the video. What im talking about is the footage that youre watching right this second of me sitting in my bedroom studio in this crappy lighting condition where ive got two lights in here, that arent really designed for this type of video shooting theyre, not really designed for video shooting At all its like the light fixture in my room, this camera takes that setting that scenario and makes just very usable footage for youtube, especially but really almost any application. If i had the right lighting setup, i would be confident in using this camera for a professional style project where you have a sit down interview, and you can just film a subject in front of the camera, its that good. I know your mind is blown isnt. It, what do you think do you have the mavic 3? If you do, let me know about what you feel about the footage and the camera performance of the mavic 3.. If you dont have the mavic 3. Let me know what you felt about this video.
