WLToys XK A160 Skylark Flying Model Piper Cub Flight Test Review
Remy was first to say first in one of my recent videos and thus was a shout out. So congratulations good morning, quadcopter 101, here with a review of the new wl toys: xk a160 skylark. Now what is the skylark? Pa, if you look at it, you can see uh for those of you familiar with older airplanes. This is a flying. Skill model actually really nicely done flying scale model of the 1946 j3c piper cub. U redu, actually kevin looks actually looks really nice. Sada, with that in mind, there are some downsides to this i'll talk about that here shortly, but let's go into what this particular aircraft has. Um, mainly, you know again: it's a nice flying scale model good, looking scale model of piper cub um. It is stabilized, it is available. Both you can fly stabilized or unstabilized to do loops and rolls. But what i mean by stabilized is this: s: through the controller, you can turn on the stabilization for this particular aircraft and it prevents the aircraft from rolling over maximum amount of degrees and also pitching up or down maximum amount of degrees. The idea being for newer pilots to help lessen the chance of you crashing, znaš, keep it easy to fly, but for better pilots advanced pilots. If they want to do loops and rolls and other acrobats with us, you can turn off that stabilization system and have full manual control of the aircraft, and with that in mind, when i talk about full manual control, this is a four channel aircraft folks.
So we both have, we have throttle, we have aileron control, we have elevator control and rudder control on the airplane and i'm going to show you one of those downsides here in a second, particularly with this building of this plane, um other things about it, has 1406 Brushless motor should give it plenty of power in flight um, four channel controls – i mentioned a 200 meter range now let's talk about let's, get into those downsides of this thing. Sada, it's constructed of epp foam, Dobar, strong epp foam, but also constructed of a lot of plastic there's, a lot of plastic in this particular aircraft. U redu. Why is that bad? Pa, that makes it potentially less durable to crashes. Ljudi, if you crash these things, i can see particularly this plastic nose, cone being a problem we'll find out. If i have any nose, ends uh some another thing potential. Is this plastic landing gear? You know the struts on this landing gear. I don't see them with standing impact very well we'll find it out again as we go flying um. These are more or less for decoration folks, and with that in mind, these keep popping up these struts here. So you might consider gluing these in on yours. It doesn't say to use glue in the instructions, but you might consider gluing these struts in and let's talk about those instructions. The instructions for this particular model were incomplete, particularly for assembly of the aircraft.
Um, a lot of things were missing. Uh. You know types of screws to use, uh horn, attachments, um (1998. A lot was more, you know attachment of the cables for the servos servo cable attachments. All you know that was just non existent in the instructions. So with that in mind, you might consider this for intermediate. Pilots that have some modeling control, your modeling experience or building aircraft experience um. You know because this required quite a bit of assembly. U redu, i have to say that out of the box now there's others out there who'll say: oh i've built balsa with airplanes, yeah yeah that's a lot more involved than this one was, but this one's still more assembly than most people uh would be used to particularly Beginner, piloti, and with that in mind, i would not recommend this for the impatient people out there. You know who you are because this this will probably cause some aggravation. I particularly had difficulty getting these wings attached into these uh holes up in the front, and then you know just attachment in the wings um again, i had to uh figure out which these cables goes to, which of these wings, so that i don't reverse the controls And with that in mind, but once you before you go flying, make sure to turn your battery and connect it to your controller and make sure all your surfaces are working properly. Kao što se očekivalo, you know for right turns uh right.
Banks left banks right turn left turn on the yaw, make sure those are all working properly folks and then they're all centered too. Before you go flying again, you do not want to crash this. If you can avoid it on your first flight, um let's see, i talked about the uh. I think i hit just almost all the main points of this particular aircraft. I want to talk about the controller let's talk about the controller. This is its controller, the standard generic xk controller um. You do have a little bit of telemetry, namely battery power from well. ne, i take that back. You do not have telemetry on this particular model, but um it tells you uh your throttle position, along with your trim, trim positions on this let's talk about those trims, since this is four channel aircraft we have throttle now on this. This is a mode two controller. I got we have yaw left and right, we have pitch control and we have roll control and additionally, we have throttle trim, they actually have throttle, trim, yaw, trim, pitch trim and roll trim buttons on here. So if any of these are moving off in a direction, and you want to balance them out, you can use those trim buttons to balance like the roll. If it wants to roll slightly, you can adjust that, but actually your stabilization system should prevent that. But if you turn the stabilization system off, then you might need to adjust that roll control and all these these other trim buttons.
Other things on this here we have. This is for your dual rates: control for low and high rates. So if you want to turn faster roll faster or do loops faster, you press that button go into high rate and that will exaggerate the control surface movement so that you can fly a little more aggressive. And then, if you just want to fly safe, you put it back in the low rate, and additionally, i mentioned stabilization again. This is on stabilization system is on this uh aircraft by default to try to maintain level flight. If you get into trouble just let go of the sticks and it should level off, but you can turn off that stabilization system by pressing this button here, one time to do your acrobatics, if you wish to do so again, if you get into trouble with doing Those acrobatics press that button to turn the stabilization system back on and the aircraft should automatically level itself in flight. Other things you get in the box with this particular aircraft. You get a spare propeller one spare propeller. You get that 7.4 v 500 milliamp hour battery notice that it uses red jst connector. So if you want spare batteries, get yourself a 7.4 volt battery with a red jst connector try to keep it under 500 milliamps to go any higher i'm, not sure that the battery will fit in this bay. Let me see here: it is a good size bay, but larger batteries i'm not sure that they would fit well in there higher than about 500 milliamp per hour um.
Other things you get in the box is the battery charger it's, a usb type wall, charger or style. Um use a wall charger with this to charge it, although i think, being 500 milliamp hour, you could also probably charge it through the usb port on your computer. So and finally, you get a screwdriver some spare screws and some spare springs for your tail wheel as a centering. Tail centering springs on the tail wheel, which is kind of nice. So um again i mentioned the struts these things here they were a nightmare to get in, especially attaching them here, but again not for the impatient. I just want to mention that so let's take this aircraft, this paper cub out to the field and see how it flies so hope you enjoy this flight folks good morning, quadcopter 101, here with a review of the wl toys, uh xk skylark uh piper cub. Now this is not going to be my maiden flight folks um. I flew my maiden flight of a few days ago with this particular aircraft and in those flights i encountered a lot of tip stones, several of them with, along with spins all the way to the ground, even with the stabilization. This is with the stabilization system off or on i'm, not sure what caused those tip stalls we're going to redo that flight. The main reason i'm, not showing that flight is because i had my hat camera a little too low in my head and most of the flight was um off camera, except for the spins and i'll.
Try to include some of those clips here, but we're going to try to redo that flight with the xk skylark, so let's try to fly again and see what happens here. So first thing i need to do is plug in the battery now about this battery. Make sure you have the battery installed in the battery bay right here slid forward all the way that might have been an issue too, because i don't think i had it that way in the original flights. Folks um. If it comes out of that bait and jiggles around it, that could have some effect on the stabilization system. So keep that in mind so plugging in the battery. All the way sliding it far forward in this bay and putting the battery cover back on battery covers on putting the aircraft on the ground and turning on the transmitter. U redu, we should have bind okay and we do checking surfaces. They look good left right down and up so we should be good to go so this will be the second flight again of this let's see how it goes folks, so the wind's coming from that direction there and giving it a throttle and up. It goes again. Stabilization systems on i'm giving a throttle trying to get some speed up this time. Being a little more careful of these turns and trying to keep my head up, so you can see it very quiet, avion, isn't, it that's. One thing that impressed me about this is it's extremely quiet, but i want to see if we run into tip stall issues this time with the battery full forward i'm going to come a little lower.
It was turning pretty good there. It didn't install coming lower, trying to be gentle this time. Ljudi, i don't want it to crash right away. Okay left turn i'm, not giving any rudder folks. This is just coordinated turns through the air, runs it's, not stalling again i'm, not sure what caused that so let's take this stabilization system off. I want to see how stable it is. Ipak, it is a high wing plane. It should have its own inherent stability. Coming around well i'm, reducing throttle i'm, not gon na, have any problems this time i'm, not sure why i had problems the other day. Sada opet, what i did was all i did was folks is move that battery all the way forward in that battery bay. It was not that way. Drugi dan, the other day i had the uh. Oh there we go, it did tip stall that time did tip stall. Nažalost, oh by the way, the other day when i did crash this nose, cone did come off um, but i didn't glue it back on folks. I just use tape. Tape holds it together, pretty well. U redu, so let's try to get back in the air again. Okay sounds good. U redu, i want to go up a bit higher is the right return. You tried, a loop did a loop, another loop, a wing over actually going stable, reducing throttle now i'm, not going into or high angle of attack.
Uh turns folks and they're. You know in higher rate i'm, going to keep it a low rate and the reason being again, i'm afraid of those stalls cool airplane, though i almost went to the tip stall again. The wind's picking up here wind seems to be an issue with this plane. Let me give it a little rudder at the same time right or turn oh hard turn there on the right. It didn't stall coming around. So this time, it's trying another loop going over and then went by putting it back and stabilized so it's flying okay. Now um yeah, i think part of the issue is that is, if i not prove me a liar by flying this without crashing it again, but the issue might be with those experienced at tip stalls. Are they putting that battery all the way forward in that battery bay? That i just showed you there um the rest of the flight will keep it we'll. Just try to do hard turns in front of us here, i'm flying rudder and ale around. For these turns these figure eights seems to be working okay now, but i am keeping speed up on it. Oh there we go, it did tip stall, so nah that's, not the only issue, folks that battery it still is prone to tip stoves um and once you get into that tip stall. They'Re unrecoverable with the water stabilization system and the battery bait came off that time.
But yeah i got that battery in there and notice what happens this landing here? How this landing gear performs? Actually i lost the screw so we're going to have to call it quits there. Ljudi, this screw has to be reinserted and i don't have the screwdriver with me, but all in all, it flies good for a while, but every once in a while. I noticed – and i think others are noticing this too, with this particular aircraft – that it is prone to entering into tip stalls even with the um stabilization system on yeah. This can be repaired. Ljudi, it's, just this little screw needs to go in there. Uh flight time is not much longer than what i just shown there about six minutes, six to seven minutes, Uh, so we're, not we're, gon na call it quits here at this point, but uh that is the xka 160, Vjerujem da, or what a180 got ta get It mixed up um skylark, Uh, piper cub model. It actually flies nice when it does fly nice, but every once in a while it'll go into one of those tip stalls. So i highly recommend you fly on a grass field like this to minimize the damage and i did lose the nose cone on that just now, too so, u redu, it's, quadcopter 101 hope you enjoyed this flight quadcopter 101 signing out hi quadcopter101 here again: Hej!
