Well, you might – and you could like this. This is my first attempt in one of the locations i filmed over the weekend, everything looking good gopro’s, a little dark. You got ta adjust the iso on that. Of course, visibility with the fpv camera is a little bit better and i thought i took everything into consideration. I had a visual observer. I had a loom, cube strobe on the thing i was flying away from people, but as a pilot in command. You have to be ready for anything and i certainly wasn’t expecting a little kid to come up and tug on my pant leg. I got it. I got i got ta fly, see, look, look what you did. Look what you made me do. Please don’t talk to me while i’m flying thank you, no it’s, all right, it’s, all right, hitting the lights. I was able to turtle out. Don’T talk to me, while i’m flying okay, and as i was returning to my launch point: oh that’s, when the kids started crowding around something about flying things with lights on it that attract children, Music. So in this video i will impart to you all the valuable lessons i learned after flying. Two different fireworks shows this past independence day after replacing three propellers. Following hitting the light, i was back up in the air for my second attempt again, i could see a little bit better with the fpv camera than what you’re seeing on the gopro, but you’re gon na want your 4k footage to be a little bit darker, so That you can see the contrast between the black sky and the fireworks themselves, it’s a delicate balance, and you just have to trial and error the settings on the gopro.
So the first thing is: first, i am flying over an area where there are no people and while the fireworks were going, i could see the ground and the trees. But of course there were lulls in between launches where i kind of got disoriented and i had to spin around and see the street lights. Luckily, they didn’t turn those off. Otherwise, i just couldn’t fly at all. I was invited by the city to come out and film this event, so i had some time to speak with the people that were putting on the show, and i understood where the fireworks were gon na go. I checked the winds to see where the smoke was gon na end up, because that can obscure lights as well. More about that later, and i also had an idea of how high the fireworks would go, because these are mostly consumer fireworks that you can buy at any stand here in the united states. On the other hand, a professional fireworks show put on by a major city you’re going to want to stay far far away from the initial explosions, because the shock wave from that can just take you out it’s so much bigger than consumer fireworks, which is what they Were shooting off here and i actually should have had a light at my landing zone that’s the first most important thing that i can impart to you bring a landing light because you’re gon na want to see where to land.
You know you’re not gon na, be able to find yourself in the dark without a flashlight. When my battery voltage got down to where i usually land, i started looking for a place to do just that, and that is when the fireworks had a lull that’s when they stopped lighting up the ground, and i couldn’t see so my choices very quickly. In my head were either stay where i was where i knew i wasn’t over people at all and then just come down, guess where the ground was or fly about, 500 yards over a couple: people, maybe over vehicles, into a field where there were lights. And i could land safely there well as a responsible pilot in command. I chose to sacrifice the quad rather than risk flying over people, so i disarmed over where i knew there wasn’t anybody and it dropped about 60 feet and ended up breaking an arm but i’d. Rather, break the arm of the drone than break the head of a spectator, and so i took these lessons to my next location in dover, tennessee, where a lovely family had been putting on a fireworks display for the neighborhood for over five years. This is michael crane. I’M in dover, tennessee and there’s a banner over this little bridge down here. That says: welcome to michael and susan’s big bang in the hollow that’s it, and how long have you been doing this we’ve been doing it at this level? For probably this is maybe about the fifth year, it’s gotten progressively larger, yes and more complex, yes and now you’re sitting there with a launch pad remote with a key in it.
Yes, this is fancy stuff. This isn’t uh we’re not messing around here. This is a cobra, remote control. This controls it’s got a program in it that i rode over the winter that controls all the firing of the of the fireworks, and you can launch one right now over there. I could but i’ve got it programmed to where it does it on its own. This is going to run through about 9 30 tonight, so uh. How many people are here enjoying this? Is this just open to the public and or yes? Well, i started this to get up for a reason for my family to get together because it’s, just as strange as it sounds, it would usually seem like the only time the extended family got together was at the funeral home of some kind of disaster yeah. I thought let’s do something to get everybody together. We can have a good time right considerably more fun than a funeral. Yes yeah much now, do you need a special permit to be able to do this, or is it just that’s tennessee? What the hell no we’re out in the county, so it’s pretty. Well anything goes. We should we shoot guns or anything out here, that’s. What i like about tennessee yep! You can just do anything. You want yep! No inspection on cars drive what you want. That’S right yeah, what is the duration of the show well it’s in different segments? We do like we always like to start off about 10 minutes apart.
We shoot parachutes and think the kids love chasing them through the yard. So we do that every 10 minutes or so, but the actual show lasts for about 20 minutes. The actual fireworks show all right. Have you ever had anybody fly a drone in the fireworks before i have not well, i can’t wait to do it. I’Ve i’ve wanted to all my life so well. Don’T shoot me down. Okay, i’ll! Try not to get shot down. How big are the booms? Are they the typical, like how big are the shells that you’re setting up these aren’t just store bought stuff? You have well, they are, it depends. We’Ve got a few homemade things and this everything we shoot here as long as you’ve got the experience and prove that you can shoot them. I can buy 1.4 pros like what you buy at the tents and everywhere around right or 1.4 fireworks they’re, the the shells about that that big 60 gram, five inch: silk shells – okay, but you make your own some you’ll, see at the end of the show. Can you do it like like this, is how big the fish i caught inside with your hand, how big about how big are they well, some of them that i shoot you wouldn’t be able to sit here because you’ll feel the heat from them? Oh yeah! How high will the the highest one go, 250 feet or so? Okay, 250, maybe 300 feet, probably an average between 150 and 250 feet, that’s good, because uh our drones aren’t allowed to go above 400 feet.
Yes, so that’s a that’s, a good pad yeah and by the way, just to let all you drone people know that yes it’s legal, to fly in fireworks. I would advise that you get with the people putting on the show make sure that you’re in class g airspace that you don’t fly directly over any people and if you’re flying at night to have a lume cube strobe link in the description that’s. How i make my money because they’re going to buy them right now, aren’t, you aren’t, you tell them to buy one: hey i’ve got a drone i’m gon na check it out. So who are these guys? These are a couple of my helpers, all right. They come. They worked all week in here with me and they’re, my good friends they’re, my neighbors. I make sure all the neighbors are invited. It makes it a whole lot easier, not visit from the law for disturbing the peace right, but these guys have been here all week. Setting this show up it’s a lot of work to set up a show like this and i’m fortunate enough to have friends and family that really come in and uh and help me out without them. I couldn’t do this, and now they have something very important. They would like to say now go what hi greg you’re alive in tennessee yeah your neighbor. I live in kentucky well you’re, my grandson, all right! Awesome! Thanks, bye! Okay, get out of here kid you’re! Bothering me Laughter.
What does a display like this cost, and can you write off on your taxes? I have never attempted to write it off on my taxes but uh this set up here you see behind us. It will be about uh five to six thousand dollars it’s, not that expensive. Have you ever had an incident over the five years. I have not that’s three and you’ll see the safety tape up. We get ready to shoot the show everybody we make sure everybody’s moved back i’m up front, everybody has to be in behind me. We go as far the extra mile as far as we can to try to make this as safe as possible. You’Ll see all the fireworks are in crates, they’re, all anchored so there’s, no moving no chance of anything turning over and we we take safety very important, it’s, good weather for the show tonight very good. I could not have asked for better and of course you have a finale yes, and that is the earth shaking gut punching just boom boom boom knock the leaves off the trees kind of thing right. No definitely so what does pyro’s call a sky peak fellow pyro? Fist pump yeah most important question of all sir may. I have a cheeseburger. Yes, you may we’ve got cheeseburgers hot dogs barbecue. So, to recap: if you want to fly in fireworks legally and safely always get with the people, putting on the show get permission first check your local laws and ordinances.
Make sure you get lance approval before you fly you’ll be flying at night, so have an faa daytime waiver. You can get one of these easily by just completing the recurrent test from the faa website. Link in the description never ever fly over people or have a trajectory that would have you land among the people. Should something go wrong get to the venue early so that you can see the obstacles and poles and wires before it gets dark increase your situational awareness by having a well lit landing area have one or more visual observers with you, the more information you receive, the Better and most importantly, don’t fly, if you’re not confident in your piloting, skills practice more and do it next year. Maybe thanks for watching thanks for subscribing until next time, buh and bye what’d, you think buddy it might be fun to build one. It could be hard. Do you know how to solder what no i left too early um one of my friends was going to teach me how to solve it.
