We want to send you a 3d printer, and i said if i bring one more product into this house, my wife is just going to leave because i have too many things everywhere and they said no. Όχι. This is a really cool 3d printer, so they said we’re going to send you the et4 3d all metal printer, but you know what i didn’t get that i got this thing instead, let me show you this big beast of a box. It’S huge look at this thing, so they sent me the et5x printer, which i think is bigger. I could be wrong it’s, bigger than i thought so what i’m gon na do is here. Let me open the box first before i tell you what i’m gon na do. This line thing is so huge look at the box it’s well packaged, Αν και, and i see why it weighed so much because it’s all made out of metal, Φυσικά. So if i read this little manual in the front, the specs say it has auto filament dispenser, filament detection. So it knows when it’s getting to the end of the filament that’s something a lot of 3d printers don’t have auto leveling.
Ναι, you definitely want that resume. Printing, so if your power goes out or something goes wrong, it can resume and offline printing as well. Pretty cool it’s also got a 3.5 ίντσα. Touchscreen power outage recovery, large print volume, it’s got upgraded control board. I have no idea what that means. ούτως ή άλλως, you know what i’m not a 3d printer guy hang on. Let me just let me just move this all right, so here’s the plan i’m going to take the 3d printer toss it in my jeep and then i’m going to drive to my brother in law’s house who lives far enough away. You’Ve met nelson in many videos. That’S my brother in law he’s an engineer by background, so he loves anything that you have to assemble put together, make it work so he’s gon na love this thing and i’m gon na. Let him set it up and i’m just gon na film him and i’m gon na. Let him make a pile of 3d parts whatever he wants and we’ll see how it works. So let’s check this out all right, wow, Music uh christmas present. Ναι, Εντάξει! So i’m at nelson’s house, the box is here nelson’s about to check it out, for the very first time, take it away nelson and tell me everything about this 3d printer, because i know nothing all right: oh that’s, a good size roll, then yeah and you’ll see They are always packed with silica gel, very well packed lots of lots of protection, so first pass pretty much what you expect a very small manual, so power, cable so on to the small bits, uh tools which is nice to see this will be a drive cable For one of your stepper motors uh, some cooking utensils here that will be oh, Εντάξει, the flipper it’s, not for flipping your eggs.
This will be to separate the your prints from your print plate, a usb cable with an sd card. So most of them allow you to print either directly from a computer or from an sd card, and then it’s got an extra nozzle i’m going to bring that nozzle out. Just to show you how small you can see that’s a 0.4 nozzle. I believe on this one yeah, so the pla is going to melt into this tiny little droplet it’s almost not visible, and then it gets melted in the unit and gets out here and the the diameter here is one of the inputs you will put into your Software and uh yay – i got my my grade school ruler again, i suspect that’s for measuring the gantry height a snipper or a cutter. Um don’t leave home without one yeah we’ll see what that’s for – and this will be. This looks to be yeah. This is uh. I suspect this is your spool holder, so this is your x y. It goes uh, x, y being x and y dimensions, so your printer head will sit on this extruded aluminum structure, move back and forth there’s a motor right here, it’s called a stepper motor. You can see here, i’ll turn it on the back and you can see the motor all right. This motor is one of the three axis controls, so the belt that we took out connects across here and it moves the head left and right.
This little piece here is what’s called a build plate. It’S a uh stick on piece of plastic, so in the box now we’re looking at a printer head, Εντάξει, so maybe that was all the weight yeah. This is where i’m gon na put probably the heaviest part of the whole thing. We’Ll put it back on there in a second, this glass will come off and is replaceable. The actual physical setup was probably 20 λεπτά. 25 minutes yeah. It was fast all right. So two weeks have gone by since the last portion of the video where nelson was setting up the printer he’s had the printer at his house, he’s used it for two weeks uh. I will tell you right now. He’S already told me: he loves this printer it’s better than his previous model, because of the way it prints and he’s gon na explain that in a few seconds, he’s graciously brought a lot of items. He’S he’s made with the printer and uh he’s going to talk about them. So nelson. The first item you have up is a cube and what’s up with the cube. So what you do with a 3d printer? Is you it’s obvious? You wanted to print to an exact dimension, so this is what’s called a calibration cube, so it’s a standard file that we run with a known dimension and we look for we print it off. To figure out is the temperature right? Does it come up in this case it’s a 20 millimeter by 20 millimeter by 20 Χιλιοστό, and if we determine are the corners, nice and square uh? Είναι εκεί, does it bond correctly to the surface? Does it curl? Are we seeing blobs? Are we seeing gaps and the end result was this? I literally that was the first cube.
I ran 20 minutes after the first thing i did after we unpacked was. I ran through a leveling process, which was about 20 λεπτά, Εεε, pretty straightforward, and then i printed this, and this is about a five minute print and i’ll say that it printed off the dimensions of that cube came in within one percent of the target. So i know nothing about 3d printers. Is that good, that’s good excellent on my very expensive, 3d printer? It took me about a week to get the cube to be right and i had to put x5 adjustment in this case. I went print and it was all automatic right out of the box yeah and it wasn’t a file provided to me by them, which should be optimized, was a file that i put into it. So you know there was no uh tuning by the manufacturer, so very good. This was this is the best i i could show you all my cubes for my other printer, which i keep for reference uh. This one would be at the right side as best cube ever so. What nelson’s gon na show me right now is he’s brought an awful lot of items he’s made for drones, because this is a drone channel and uh run through them, really quick nelson. So i did a bunch of things when i did some simple stuff. All my files, for the most part came off something called thingiverse, because i wanted to be able to use something that other people can grab.
You should be able, Νομίζω, i’ll, give the links to steve, and so, if you like, some of the things here, you can just pick on them and go to x below this video first thing i did was uh. I worked in pla, which is the what they called the training material it’s easiest to use. We have a picture, we have a picture of the label and the pla up here. Pla is good for what we call hobbyist level stuff, but it’s a little bit brittle and although easy to print and easy to clean and all that sort of stuff it’s, not the greatest thing for for some elements, if you have work outside you work near water, It’S not stable for it it’s a biodegradable material, so it’s good. Many of these parts are pla. Then i use something called tpeg, which is more of a hardy material to use for uh it’s a little more flexible, but it’s a lot tougher. So i printed it both it’s a little tougher to print it’s, a little tougher to get stick it’s a temperature’s a little bit different to deal with, but we started with pla and then moved on and i’ll say that the pla was dead. Simple. I made almost no adjustments i put in the bog standard 190 Βαθμούς, 65 degree plate. I didn’t have to do anything to the base plate to make it stick any better, and the first thing i printed this is a file right from the comes with the disk, and you would expect this to be a good print, because it’s they’ve, they’ve optimized what’s Called the g code, which is the the language that talk the printer, είναι – and i will admit for all the little overhangs and items you get here.
There was almost no bridging that’s a little there’s a little bit of bridging there. But if you look at the quality of the finish, let’s put it down there. If you put the quality finish, it is exceptionally good and that’s about a point. One millimeter finish all right. So quite good. I have no desire for a little black puppy dog that’s. What they gave us so with that i had confidence to move on to things and i then started with what i would call thin wall items. So these are items such as this, so what these are clips that are designed for the mavic mini. So this is a prop lock. So if we look here, you can see they’re relatively thin in terms of their it’s. Probably only two or three passes here’s the downside of using pla that’s, very brittle yeah. It can snap yeah, so we would in making a real one. We made it out of a different material okay. So what about these ones that you made? You made your cup holders, so these are examples of yeah, so these are printed in a in an orange pla. So this is a lower prop holder that snaps, but is this more bendable or is it no? Όχι. I just made them thicker, Ω, έτσι, Εντάξει, so i see what you’re saying if you make it thicker it’s not going to snap yeah and if anybody’s wondering who has a really good eye and is looking at this image right now of this mini.
It looks like frankenstein right here: he’s got no motor covers because nelson rebuilds, these minis so yeah, so that’s that’s another story, but yeah move on nelson what’s, the next one. So then i did some small detailed stuff. So this was for the captain uh. I made him a little drone and you can see that we’ve got it’ll print quite well. Small little details, Εντάξει, here’s, the little antenna that we’re going to put on and there’s a little motor and uh cover, and so keychain yeah. The intent here was to see uh if it can handle that 20 millimeter cube. How well does it turn out the small parts, and in this case the props will turn? Ω, they do. Ω, i never even check that they snap on these are fpv gates, so i’ve just gotten into fpv, droning think courtesy of steve. I would call he’s a he’s, my pusher of drones, and these are ground ground anchors for an fpv gate. So imagine here you would put in a tent peg a metal tin peg, and that puts it to the ground. You then slide your pool, noodle right down here, and you have a pool noodle up and using these connectors you can connect any number of pool needles with a set of two of these. You end up with a racing gate, so the next time steve and i go out racing i’m going to be well versed on flying through we’ll have the gates up.
I guess so. We’Ll do the speed test again so again from a quality of finish. Very very exceptional yeah. It looks really good. It looks like something you’d buy at the store and this size yeah one of the challenges you have when you build big things – and this is a big printer. It’S got a 300 από 300 από 400 work volume, which is a pretty good size. One of the challenges you have with big ones with lots of is that you get vertical movement and it creates a a flaw, and once you get that flaw, the flaw is always there and so it’s, quite common with really big products. You end up with finish issues, and you can see here. The finish here is actually spectacular: yeah it’s got a nice sheen to it. The way it’s designed and it’s very uniform yeah it doesn’t look. I don’t see any defects in it. Ναι – and this is quite strong – the designer built these really thick material for 3d printing is really cheap, like it’s in pennies per meter. So we’ll talk about this one first, this was the most dimensionally tight design i worked on. This is for the typhoon h. This is the camera adapter. Did you want to hold up your typhoon h if you can bring it over here? I have a close up shot of this, so you’ll see it here as well, so there it is installed. So this replaces this is what holds the so this piece right here right here.
This is what holds the whole camera assembly and it has to integrate with the electronics all right, and these are common parts that you break and nelson repairs typhoon ages too. Έτσι, Ναι, he makes all the parts so for the uni, the typhoon agent, particular parts are getting tougher and tougher to find so i’ve been finding source files or making my own to do it, and this is one that i’ve tried to print on my very expensive Printer and i never was able to get it to work, so i was absolutely amazed how well this one turned out so let’s flip it over now and you’ll, see what i mean about support structure so this this structure, if you look at it, is actually concave Underneath but you can’t print a concave, you wouldn’t have a surface, so what we do is we print a grid? Now the software does this all by itself, so it determines that it’s got something sitting up in space, it needs what’s called supports and it will print a support so that it you get a nice smooth surface and then the supports come off. Given that i’ve just got a dji fpv and had my first crash yesterday, these are filter adapters, so i haven’t yet purchased my filters. I have filters for every one of my other drones and this one intrigued me, because this allows me to take my mavic pro 2 or mavic 2 filters or zoom or sorry pro 2 filters and use them on my on my dji fbi.
So this take you snap, your filter onto this, and this now is a press fit onto the lens of the fpv and these. So if you have existing filters from the previous drawing exactly a whole new set – and what i show here is this – is a multi color print, so i printed in black and then a halfway through i stopped i paused it. The system knew to pause. I then unloaded and loaded the filter. Εντάξει, it only has one print head, unlike some of the really expensive ones, that have multiple materials, but you can get a multi color print, it won’t be perfect, but it does have the capability and then i decided to because we were talking about a big area. I leveled everything and i did my biggest print, so this is about the you know, almost the size of our print area, and this is an fpv frame. This one’s done in pla, probably not the best material because of it being brittle uh. I have done the same frame in tp don’t crash no tpeg and it’s good, and you can see there was almost no uh cleanup on this and so it’s a very, very clean, uh print yeah. I was very pleased with that. All right nice finish to it, and then this one here i did in tpeg. Εντάξει, this is the top plate, so you can see it sort of matches up again. This is a design from thingiverse i’ll put the link down there and uh.
Φυσικά, this will sit like this with standoffs and that’s, where our stack and our uh yeah cadecs, so nelson is actually going to build, build the this here, drone an fpv drone with motors and the stack as he mentioned, and the camera and the camera transmission System which will sit nicely underneath this, i think i calculated this whole frame – has cost me less than five dollars yeah. So so interesting works. Καλά, you know i, i suspect, the first time it crashes, it will be in pieces, but it is relatively robust and weight. Wise it’s, oh it’s, got no weight to it, Υπάρχει, nothing to it right, Ναι, Είναι, Είναι, no different than well it’s, probably even less than carbon fiber frames that we have and the last thing we’ll talk about. This is a repeat i had done this on. My previous you may have, if you watch captain drone videos, you’ll have seen my i previously had a pro 2 zoom uh and yeah. These had printed these red handles on my old machine. It probably took me uh a good two hours of post production on your old machine on my old machine to clean it up, in other words, get rid of the excess sand. It a little bit get rid of all those remnants that we had from here. This printed, i have done no post processing whatsoever on the new machine, so the finish is very very nice um.
I should oh sorry i was going to say if you haven’t seen nelson use these before it’s, because he has a sailboat. So when he’s out on the lake sailing and he’s launching his drone wants to catch, it just grabs the hands or the handles here to catch it, and it also works well in the winter, as we saw in the videos and landing yep their landing legs as Well and there’s: nothing permanent about them. They just slide on or off yep. Take them off really easy and they weigh nothing. Yeah like they almost feel like they’re, just a piece of paper like yeah, καλά, είναι, yeah it’s. You must have like a honeycomb interior or something because yeah they’re all weight to this all 3d printing. When you give it the pit, the software, the picture, it there’s a thing called a slicer and in there you get to determine the parameters and so on this one it’s uh, the walls are all 1.2 millimeters thick, so it’s basically, three passes four millimeters and the Inside is a honeycomb okay, so that’s, why it’s not solid material yeah and so the stronger you want it, the thicker, the walls and that kind of yeah. So it affects nothing on the on the drone flying around it flies. The weight flies the exact same yeah. Εντάξει, so now this is the part of the video that i’m gon na ask nelson uh. What are his niggly little uh dislikes, with the printer, using it for the last two weeks, yep and he’s already told them to me and when he told them to me, i said those are nothing negative.
Ωστόσο, you know you can’t do a review without bringing up some things that might be uh. They might bother some people, but they’re definitely not negative when it comes to the positive yeah, but go ahead. Nelson overall i give it. I give it a night. Ω, you can’t talk about the positive okay yeah i got it. I got to be negative. All right got to be negative, a few negative things, the routing of the the uh cable or the material. The filament okay is, has a relatively tight corner, and so, if there’s, any resistance on the wheel, that tight corner can cause it to break or it can cause resistance to the drive and any resistance affects the flow. So you were telling me earlier that if there is resistance or breaks, this thing is smart enough to just stop working yeah and wait for you to fix the problem. So what this has, which my expensive one doesn’t has a filament sensor. So i was printing off this actual one here and about a third of the way through it was running at night unattended, which is quite common about a third of the way through we had a jam on the wheel on the top. In other words, they got laid over and, Φυσικά, it just tightened it up like a roll of fish line right, and so eventually it snapped the scent at the bottom there’s enough, filament it just kept printing until the filament sensor said: Γεια, Υπάρχει, no more filament And said: stop and at that point like a good puppy dog, it stopped and it sat there for probably six hours until i went down in the morning and it said uh uh, filament error, so it’s like an out of paper on a printer, exactly you’re out Of paper just stops and waits you come back, you put paper just carries on where it left off.
On my other printer, i would have peeled everything off reloaded restart in this one. I just hit unload reload reloaded it and once it was reloaded i hit restart and it continued on, and you can see that part. There is no artifacts of anything having gone wrong. We just turned that negative into a positive that’s, true, which uh probably messes up. My whole negatives go to your next negative we’re. Next negative. I don’t like the uh there’s it’s, all done with a smallest sd id card uh pretty standard. The micro sd holder is in set a little bit on the side side, metal frame and there’s a metal frame, metal hole, cut out, which is about three times the height of the sd card, and that, just by chance, the gap between the sd receiver and the Metal is about the same distance as the card is the card itself, so it is very easy when looking from the side to put it in the wrong spot and twice missed the entire hole twice i’ve put the card in, you feel the friction you push it In and you hear, clink and your card has fallen inside the frame, so do you just take the bottom off to get it off? Καλά, you don’t want to, because that invalidates your warranty and you need special fences. I shook it really. So i would. I would make that hole smaller and i would also bring the sd card out.
So what i’ve learned now is make sure i’ve got enough space to look down the side and just check right, but i did do it. He did it once. Shame on me twice. Even more shame, my other complaint would be these clips, so the this is the what’s called the build plate. The build plate is attached to the glass, and this is all heated and you want to be able to take these off and clean them and replace build plates. So these clips just pop off okay, so that’s wonderful. The problem is often depending how strong your your item is adhered to. This build plate, you’re using a scraper to get underneath it and what that just pushes the whole thing off these clips all go flying yeah they go flying. So i now have two of the four original clips, because they’re somewhere in my shop yeah – so you know so you’ve developed this really ingenious thing here called what are these called yeah so i’ve in in the interim i’ve used clamps. What i’ve done is i’ve designed corner devices uh with screws to be able to lock it down? Εντάξει, Εντάξει, so i stole that design off of my other printer, so that’s, relatively good. Only one uh material can be printed here at a time. Yeah that’s fine uh temperature range is pretty good um any other negative. So before not not really, i would say very good, so positive, Σοφός, well performance for prices without really good yeah.
You sort of alluded to that right at the beginning, compared to your other printer. Your expensive printer, this being a less expensive printer, still probably expensive to some people, never bought a 3d printer but uh for the money you’re saying and this and in canada, where everything is overpriced. Uh you’re saying this is well worth it. I put it this way. My expectation was that this would be an entry level, hobbyist sort of device and we’d be good at doing making little puppy dogs chess pieces uh, maybe dungeons and dragons things whatever you want right lots of christmas ornaments like nothing that was dimensionally, really tight. What shocked me was the quality of the dimensional where’s. My these, these sort of things that were very close tolerance fits, and you really can’t get it wrong right, Ναι, and so that really surprised me in a positive size, so much so that i now have two 3d printers and i know which one i’m keeping and It’S and it’s, not my expensive one yeah there you go um the other, the other positives. The setup was incredibly intuitive. This one nelson set it up and i thought it was thought it was going to take forever. But you set it up in no time at all, probably and because you were talking mostly because if you had it took me longer to set up, because i was talking to you yeah at worst it’s, eight bolts and uh plug in yeah.
Everything was really well labeled, so definitely for a beginner. This is definitely a beginner 3d printer all right. So my takeaway on this video is that nelson loved, the printer he’s obviously going to keep it. It seems like it’s really decent for the price. It has a lot of features: Εγώ είμαι., a newbie, but from everything that nelson just mentioned. I could definitely run this printer, Κανένα πρόβλημα. I could get it up and working with the the basic of basics and then learn from there. Έτσι, nelson any final words before we sign off. Όχι, i agree with your assessment. This would be, and i think the proof is i’ve got two printers now, and this is the one i’m going to keep the other one’s going to i’m going to sell. Εντάξει. Στην πραγματικότητα, i’ll break it down for parts and sell it to the efficient melt it down. So if you fly drones like nelson and i uh or even nelson’s done home renovations using 3d printers building things around his house, if you’re you have to build anything that is broken or you just come up with an idea. Uh but, όπως είπα, if you’re in the drone hobby then having a 3d printer, is really really good, especially if you’re in the fpv hobby as well, and as you can see, there’s no end to what nelson can do and he’s going to keep on making Parts for myself and for other people as well in the hobbies so i’m going to put links below nelson probably has some more final words.
I was going to say one of the things about 3d printing. Είναι, you know it’s daunting at first, but you use. You know other people’s files and then you get into that. I want you to design my own stuff and, as steve said once you have one it’s amazing, the things you find yeah, you had to learn from scratch: yeah yeah, expensive, and then you just keep on. I needed a special fitting to cover off a gas valve shut off and it was going to look ugly and nobody would sell me one because so i designed my own and then just last weekend i was working on assembling some huge wardrobes from ikea and we Snapped one of the locking pins or we i did yeah, and so i went ah and then i thought well, i got to go to ikea and i went no. I don’t and i printed my own. It just made your own yeah, so you once you have one it’s amazing, the number of things you found that’s right because there’s no end to which you can actually build or repair uh, even if it’s, just for a temporary sake, if it’s made out of small Material all right guys, uh links are below to this here printer.
