One first topic is dji, possibly coming up with a new drone. There were some leaks, so we’ll talk to you, hiya from drone excel a little bit find a little bit more information about all this. The second topic is something that we talked about last week, which is some proposed uas drone laws coming from senator lee in utah and we’ll talk to kenji from the dspa, the drone service provider alliance, about what they found out, what they’re doing and what you can Do to actually help with this number three is dji. Dji is going to sell their enterprise product directly to the customer, and this is kind of a new thing, and this is not necessarily a good thing for certain people. So we’ll talk about what uh consequences. This is going to have and the last one we have a new podcast right around the corner. So i will give you a bit more information about this, so let’s get going, and the first thing this week is a leak from dji, not from dji about dji. About possibly a new drone and that new drone is called the mavic air 2s. So whatever that means, but we have higher with us higher from drone excel. So hiya tell us a little bit more about what is going on with this and what you actually found out. Hey greg. Thank you for having me on the show this week, yeah it’s been real soon for a new dji drone to make it to the market.
I mean it’s only been weeks since we saw the introduction of the dji fpv drone, which is like an entirely new kind of drone for a new audience. If you will for dji now in the fcc filings that we discovered earlier in the week, we see that there’s a dji air 2s drone making its way over to the north american market and for that matter around the world. I would imagine dji mavic. Luft 2 was introduced pretty much around a year ago and to see a new drone come to the market with the name dji air 2s makes us believe that this is a successor to the original dji mavic air 2.. Why would they drop the name? Mavic was in the past, the name: mavic has always been used for drones, that have foldable arms and that are easy to take with you, like the mavic pro the dji mavic, 2 pro and zoom. Of course the mavic mini as well. They all had the word mavic in there, so to now see dji drop that that part of the name is kind of surprising. Jedoch, we’ve seen it with the dji mavic mini as well. The successor to the mavic mini is called the mini 2 and that drone was only introduced a year later after the original, because the ceo of dji, frank wang supposedly had said that the video quality of the original mavic mini just simply wasn’t good enough. Jetzt, meiner Meinung nach, the dji mavic air 2 is actually a great drone, es ist, probably one of the drones that gives you the most value of your for your money if you’re shopping within the dji product line, so to see that drone potentially now get an upgrade.
I would imagine, is going to give the dji mavic 2 zoom and pro models a run for their money. Jetzt, what are we expecting and i’ll? Read it from the specs here there’s a couple of things that we assume that might be uh part of this new drone for one we think there might be a better camera with better photo and video recording capabilities with a larger sensor. Ocita lv have has rumored that it might be a one over 1.7 Zoll-sensor, an imx 686 sensor on board of this drone. That would allow you to take 64 megapixel photos and shoot video at 4k, but also at 60 frames per second now. If that happens, that would be pretty impressive. We would expect better low light capabilities and, just in general, better video recording capabilities which actually might bring this drone real close to the dji, Mavic, 2 zoom and pro models, so we’ll have to see if this is going to happen. But this will be one area where we can expect improvements. The other one would be ocusync 3.0, which is now also simplified in its naming convention and it’s referred to as just o3 it’s, a successor to occusync 2.0, which already is a great video transmission system. So if we now get the third iteration of that system, which is also on board of the dji fpv drone by the way, then that would be a step up for sure. Jedoch, in my experience flying the dji mavic air 2 i’ve never really had any issues in terms of video transmission signal, so it’s already at a really good level.
So to see an improvement, there makes sense because it’s available, we know it’s there in the dji fpv drone, how much additional value it will add for most people in real life. Flying conditions remains to be seen, Natürlich. Now the last part where we think dji might make an improvement for the dji air 2s would be the dji airsense technology that’s, a technology that will allow you to be warned by the controller on the display of any nearby manned aircraft, so lasst uns, say smaller airplanes. Helicopters, although of course those those other men’s aircrafts would need to have adsb out installed and activated in their aircraft, for you to be able to receive those warnings, jedoch, it does work really well. I’Ve experienced it myself a few times, it’s really nice, to get those warnings you get them real early. So if you’re flying somewhere and there’s a man’s aircraft close by it, gives you plenty of time to get out of the way and safely land. Your drone. Jetzt, when the original dji mavic air 2 names are getting confusing with with dji was introduced about a year ago, only the drones for the north american market had dji air sense technology installed. The drones that were sold elsewhere in the world did not come with air sense. Technologie. Dji is promised that, as of january 1st 2020, all new drones would have adsb in installed, so we suspect that maybe for the dji air 2s, this might now be a standard component for any customer around the world and not solely for the people here, nor in The u.
s markets that will be improvement for sure. Außerdem, the label, the battery label, is shown in the fcc filing as well, basically shows you that the battery has the same capacity as the battery that we saw on the original dji mavic air 2.. Also, in terms of additional flight time, we’re not really expecting any, maybe maybe one or two additional minutes if they, if they’re able to just squeeze some more efficiencies out of the drone elsewhere. Jedoch, i think the flight time is going to be very similar to what we’re already used to, which is already a great flight time, so no worries there, yeah it’s interesting, because the fcc filing having been made public now would be an indication that this drone should Hit the market soon, jedoch, on our side in the media, we haven’t heard anything from dji. Yet typically they contact us. They have us, agree to an nda and keep all the information uh under wraps until the official launch date. We haven’t heard anything from them. Yet so i would imagine it’s gon na be at least another two, maybe three weeks before we see this drone hit the market, but for sure we’ll keep you posted either here on the pilot institute, youtube channel or, Natürlich, on drone xl.co so be sure to Stay tuned and check in with us any new information that we discover will be shared with you, Natürlich, on either one of those those channels.
Also danke, greg and looking forward to the next show next week and back to you all right. Thank you hi. I really appreciate your information as always, and uh and we’ll see you in the next time, hopefully with even more information than we have this time, and the second story this week is a story from utah. We talked about utah last week and i said that there was going to be some uh, some more information coming from the dspa, the drone service provider alliance, and this week we have kenji suguhara with us on the show and kenji has more information about us about What’S going on and also what the dspa is doing to help resolve this issue, so kenji welcome on the show what the hell is going on. We’Ve definitely had issues with senator lee from the state of utah before introducing legislation and he’s done it again, and the bill that he’s introduced is now on the committee on commerce, science and transportation, and it what it does is seeds authority to the locals. For the the first 200 feet of the nas and uh, the problem is that we could really end up with a patchwork of uh regulations, uh through states and through municipalities, um, and just to just to give you an idea of how bad this. This piece of legislation is, it specifically says that it it. It allows states to require their own equipment on drones. So just imagine this you’re working, you ha, Du gehst.
You have to go from one state to the other, and suddenly the equipment needs to change. You'Re. Going to be spending a lot of money, it could be a difference in paperwork and additional hurdles, because what could happen is municipality? The rules could change a lot of us operators operate in even three different jurisdictions. In one flight i mean if, if things change just going from one to the next to the next, how are you supposed to comply with them and one thing that’s that that’s sort of hidden in this legislation is a requirement to sort of participate in utm and If you look at the legislation, it’s very sneaky about it, because it talks about standards and to prove standards, they really have to tie in with utm and it’s it’s buried. I forget what page uh it’s on, but take a look at it. Uh it’s a very interesting way that they approach the other piece too, is that it speaks. The bill speaks about authority over certain things that states already do, which is the police powers that are that are reserved, Zum Beispiel, nuisance regulating takeoff and landing locations. So it it in essence, it’s sort of redundant to what is already available with tools to uh states and municipalities. When you say, equipment could be different. What kind of equipment give us an example of what that could be heck? You never know well transponders different types of transponders, whether remote id or not.
They they could require parachutes to even fly. It could require certain types of drones or certain specific types of software on board. So it could take a variety of of tacks to or ways to sort of increased burdens, so states can do what they want. In essence, i think the way they have it written is. If, if flight’s going to be under 200 Füße, then they can make those sort of demands. I think that’s, where the issue, one of the big big issues for us, comes in yeah and and this would be uh federal regulation not just for utah yeah yeah. Also, in essence, what it would allow is states to uh control uh, the all the airspace underneath 200 Füße: wow ja, most most commercial operations, occur under 200 Füße: Oh ja, absolutely yeah. This is the end of doing your local photo shoot for real estate. Doing your mapping mission doing all of that would be uh, become a nightmare um. So you have you guys, been able to talk to senator lee about any of this or how? What what have you been doing? I know you’ve been doing a lot in the background. Our feeling is that uh it’s a lost cause with senator lee. Noch wichtiger ist, i i think it’s going to be more effective to talk to uh the folks on the cst, which is the the committee on commerce and science, address them and tell them how it would impact people, businesses and even flying recreationally.
So what we’ve done is we’ve actually written an article that that is now on the dsp website, which goes through how people can make a difference in terms of writing letters how to or even setting up meetings with field staff and we go through some of the Bullet points that we were able to distill from the bill itself and then uh really give a call to action and describe how you can best impact that process. And this is something that anybody can do because i mean senator lee is from utah. But you don’t have to live in utah, so i want to make this clear to people that are watching this is that anyone can reach out and uh and have this call for action and take action to do it. So i think this is important. Correct it’s, especially useful if you are in sort of the district or the state where the committee members are from, but it’s still valuable for the committee members to hear from all of us. Even if you don’t live in the state, has anybody else in the industry been involved with this, that you know of dji any of the the big key players that are on the deck or anything been involved with this? I think a lot of people are keeping their eyes on it. The question is how far it will get. We just want to make sure that the folks that are looking to get this passed around notice that there’s going to be unified and vocal opposition, so it’s not only this bill but, Zum Beispiel, Äh.
What we’re, also looking forward to is the faa reauthorization, where they might try to sneak this in there too. So ist es, not only the build, but looking forward to show these folks hey we’re, going to stand up as an industry. We really won’t take it because it could severely impact the way we make our livelihoods and our and provide for our families, and for those of you that are not familiar, the the faa reauthorization bill. We had one in 2018 Wenn, when does it expire? I don’t remember off the top of my head, so that’s fine so but but they could be so at this stage. Where is it in the process of approval bills? Go through certain steps before they make it to to the final vote right, so let’s educate our listeners a little bit on that on that those steps sure so it’s been referred to committee, so the the committee’s going to take a look at it. This is our best opportunity to kill it before it gets sent on after it passed. If it passes a vote there, then it goes to the full senate. So we want to make sure that we sort of are able to either get a table or killed at at this point, all right anything else that we miss. I know you’re working on another project as well, another bill that’s being uh proposed. Can you tell us a little bit more? I know i know we will hear more about this one in the future, too it’s uh house bill 3403 out of texas.
What it does is really sets it up. So any bv loss flights beyond visual line of sight flights pretty much have to take a place over navigation easements which are anticipated to be roads or areas over which you have permission, it’s geared toward delivery, but it’s going to capture fpv significantly and then down the Road, when bv loss becomes sort of available for routine operations for 107 will be caught on route 2.. So it sets a really bad precedent and within it the the bill itself. It talks about charging for airtime or flying flying within these navigation easements, so there’s there’s. Some very interesting pieces too that we really don’t like yep yeah. I can’t. Imagine well we’ll, have you again or vic talking about this when, when you hear more, but anything else that i missed for this one now, the the big thing is uh make sure to check out the dspa uh website and the article which will give you good Guidance and gives you a really good breakdown, yep and and i’ll put the link down here for those of you that are watching click on the link, it’ll take you directly to the article and and more than ever now i know i i i kind of tried To get you guys to sign up for the dspa, but there is a reason why you want to sign up for the dspa, because these guys they’re they’re doing the fight right here and uh.
Kenji and vic are really helping with trying to get your voice out there, so this is important uh to support them so yeah and and uh greg. Genauso wie ein Heads up, we did. We finally got around to getting a social media person, so we’ll we’ll be we’ll, be pushing more information and more content out to folks. So they can see what we’re actually doing, because we want to make sure that people know that we’re actually doing stuff for them. Rather than just collecting money for no reason yeah – and i i know you are because i talk to you and i talk to vic on a regular basis – and i know what you guys are fighting for so well kenji. I really appreciate your time and uh, and the updates and we’ll see you next week. Hoffentlich, we’ll never see you again because it means that no one is trying to push these crazy laws, aber in der Zwischenzeit, thanks for all your time, thanks thanks greg thanks for having me on the third story. This week is dji that is going to sell their enterprise drones directly to the customer, and this is a this is a major change from dji dji has put this network of dealers approved dji dealers throughout the country that up until now have been selling their enterprise. Drohnen, enterprise being the larger, more expensive drones that typically require training straight out of the box, just doesn’t it does fly, but obviously the more training you get the better you are so they’ve been using the the drone dealers in order to dji dealers.
In order to do this and and they’ve decided that they were going to sell this directly to the customer now i can see a positive from this. The positive is the fact that now, if you work in department where you need to get a quote quickly, then you can go directly on the dji website. Get the price information, and then there it is. The big downside is that dji is going around their dealers. That have helped them establish this entire network and help them sell these drones for all these years. So a lot of the a lot of people are seeing this as a major low blow from dji to their whole network. I find this interesting. The the dealers don’t only just sell the product. The dealers are great at providing additional training at providing service once they sell the drone. Dann, if there’s any issue, then instead of dealing directly with dji, if you’ve dealt any time with dji, you know how painful it can be. Stattdessen, you deal directly with the the dealer, which is uh much much better. So if you are in a position where you need to buy a drone, please please don’t buy directly from dji. You can lose a ton of services that you are going to get with the dealers themselves. The price is going to be pretty much the same. Äh. All these services that the dealers are providing you they’re, providing when they give you the the drone as a package deal.
So everything comes right here and um and you’re definitely not going to get that from dji. I can tell you that so make sure that you remember when you buy one of these expensive drones: i’m talking about the matrice 300, the matrice 200 i’m talking about any kind of large zen, muse cameras or even the the the drone. The the mavic enterprise series buy it from a dealer and get the service and the the the post uh purchase service as well with it so that’s my that’s, my psa, for you guys out there so i’ll put a link down in here. So you can see more information about this, but i i thought this was a really interesting change. Okay last story: this week is, we are introducing a new podcast and the podcast is going to be called pixel drone show and the pixel is really a mix of pi pilot institute and excel drone excel. We are partnering with haya kester low at drone excel. You just saw haya in the previous clip and you’ve seen him before on this show, and we are going to do a full blown plot podcast. Now there will be three co hosts for this podcast myself, hiya and also we’re bringing kara murphy on board. Kara is a journalist and a writer for the tech world and she writes about all the new technology, vor allem Drohnen, und – and we i put this team together with haya and with care, because we will be able to get.
You will be able to get a different perspective from three different people that are in the industry at in three different places. If you want in three different uh positions, so i think this will be a great show. We recorded the first episode it’s going to go, live on tuesday. This is going to have its own channel, so we’ll be posting some briefs on this channel as well and uh. So you can see a preview of what you expect, but you’ll see the full episode on its own channel. This is going to be available at podcast and this is also going to be available as a video on uh on youtube. So um, if you guys, are looking for something longer, i try to keep these uh shows, except this one is going to be a little bit longer than normal, but i try to keep these shows shorter. I try to only talk about four specific topics and not give you a lot of my personal opinion. I want this to be as neutral as possible because well, i believe that we should still have and i’m not a journalist by any means, but this is your ability to get news that is not filled in with any personal opinion. Sometimes i do, but most of the time i try to keep it as neutral as i can. The podcast will be a little bit different where i’m going to put in a little bit more of my personal perspective and my personal opinion and and same for hayah and same for care.
So you’ll get something a little bit longer 30 minutes to an hour episode. If you’re driving – and you want to listen to something that doesn’t have much of a visual but has a lot of just good information about what’s going on in the industry, then this is going to be the podcast for you so i’m excited about this. We we had a really good first episode, so i look forward to getting your feedback and hearing what you guys want to hear on those podcasts any specific topics or anything just make sure that you, let us know so that’s all i have for you this week. If you guys want to head over to the airplane news update, i talk about several things in there. I talk about the the new travel outlook. We beat some records for a passenger enplanement over last week, which was a good news. This we’re going in the right direction, i’m going to talk about the p hack, the pilot, the handbook of aeronautical knowledge, is getting an update. I didn’t talk about it in this channel because i figured if you guys want to hear about this. You can go to the other channel and then i’ve got a few briefs about aircraft. So if you’re interested in aircraft stuff head over to our airplane channel and watch the news update over there that’s all i have for you this week as always like subscribe. Do all the stuff that you do and uh and fly safe and don’t create new regulation.
Okay, don’t no go talk to your uh politicians and make sure that they put some pressure on mr lee all right.
