When that connection gets severed, it cant be regained. With the Skydio. It can lose gps connection and continue operating with its reliable, its 360 degree vision systems.. , So lets get to. It Were on site. Now This is how Skydio X2 3d scanning works at a high level. First were going to get the drone set up on site. The process for inspections works a little different depending on the type of structure, youre inspecting, for example, a roof vs. a windmill, but at their core. This gives Skydio X2 its confines to work in.. Next, the drone will take off and form a 3d model of the structure through a process called exploration.. During this process, the X2 will explore the structure and build as accurate of a 3d model as it can Using this rough draft model. The X2s AI system is going to preplan the photo angles and shots that need to take place.. The last step before taking off on a mission is to set a few parameters that we want from the scan.. Gsd is ground sampling distance, which is just the distance between pixels, measured on the ground. This measure tells us how accurate the images will be.

. The next measure is overlap. Overlap will allow images to be stitched together to create the model afterward. Higher degrees of overlap. Like 75 and above are usually recommended for drone inspections. One weve set these variables. Skydio will be off to the races It will display for us real time how many images will be captured and how long the flight will take.. We just have to sit back, watch the skies and let the X2 do its thing now. If we need to change batteries during the mission, we can have the X2 return to us and land on its case.. Before we replace the battery, we can take out or phone and check our images in the Skydio Enterprise app to make sure everything looks to standard. After we replace the battery itll go right back to where it was and continue scanning. So the X2s done with its scan. Now That was impressive, But now its time to see how the data came. Out. We can upload the data we got to any of the major photogrammetry platforms like Bentley Context, Capture, Drone, Deploy or Reality Capture. To make our 3d model were going to use Bentley Context Capture As soon as weve processed the model. Well, bring you back in to check the results, So weve processed the data and compiled it together into a final product.. In total, our 3d scan was made up of a little over 400 images Beyond the quality which well get into in just a moment.

Another thing that made this mission impressive is where it occurred., As you can tell from the video this welcome structure, sits in the middle of a roundabout.. The only reason this mission was possible is due to the standoff distances. The x2 is able to achieve.. What do we mean by that? Well, the X2 color is able to fly just feet from the structures its inspecting. Thanks to that awesome, AI governed obstacle avoidance. We talked about earlier.. If we were using a drone from any other company, it would likely require us to get too close to traffic or the telephone pole wires that bordered the entire roundabout.. In addition to being close to the structure, the pillars ceiling and floor, we set up in pre planning the mission served as a geofence that the drone wont stray from assuring safety for ourselves and any passing vehicles.. We thought this was really impressive and wanted to share it with you. First before taking a deeper dive into the 3d model, weve created from the images., So lets go check that model out now, As you can see, the model is pretty impressive. We want you guys to have a chance to move around the environment and see what we see so were going to work on, adding this data to a shareable link in the description in the next few days.. But as we can tell, the detail is incredible.. Like we mentioned, we flew just a few feet from the structure during this mission, and this allowed us to capture fine details like text on the side of the security camera and even texture and tones in the wood planks.

Here.. This mission took a little under 15 minutes to capture and gave us model that we can use to take accurate measurements.. In terms of this welcome sign, we wont be too concerned with any cracks in the structure, if anything, theyd probably add a little character. Lol. The benefit having accurate models where you can easily detect and measure deformities becomes a lot more critical when you use this drone to inspect infrastructure, like bridges, towers, dams and more Well test out plenty more structures over the coming days. But the point of this test was to show that nearly any 3d structure can be mapped and produce a deliverable with great detail and precision.
